Simple generator
http://amasci.com/coilgen/ Build this ultra-simple AC electric generator from magnets, wire, and cardboard. (And a big nail!) Light a small lightbulb, or flash a red LED.
This demonstrates how generators work. Now if you want a more useful device, use a small DC motor as a generator, since it has much better magnetics design. All motors are generators. Figure out how to spin a motor's shaft, and you can make a small powerful generator. Or... figure out how to convert the cardboard generator into a motor!

Dangerous High-speed Magnetic Levitation
See http://amasci.com/maglev/magroll.html EM repulsion lifts a neodymium magnet above two spinning copper pipes. Also see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOaBnJpIRzM I bought my supermagnets from Mr. George "magnetman," also from wondermagnet.com. The pipes are thick-wall schedule-80 copper pipes from the scrap bin at Alaskan Copper and Brass. The motor is a replacement sewing machine motor from Grainger catalog. Speed control is a 1000-watt triac lamp dimmer.

hand-drawn holograms
see http://amasci.com/holo/ Scratch-holograms can be made on CD cases using a couple of thumbtacks poked through a stick. Or get fancy and use a professional compass and black painted polycarbonate. Or automate the process with a paperclip stuck into a motorized electric eraser.

Zero-cost Steadicam!
Build a crude and simple 'steadicam' with no equipment at all. You just need the concept: a camera with a counterweight. Then simply grasp it at the balance point. (No, it's not QUITE as good as an expensive professional version. Heh.) Also: turn the tripod's pan handle sideways and grab it for more horizontal stability. The field is zero around a blob of small neodymium magnets ...unless you align them first! Color CRTs get distorted! Make some rotating compasses from rings of magnet beads.
