Red Lion Inn Fire - Bensalem, PA
The historic Red Lion Inn burned to the ground the morning of December 26, 1991. Action News WPVI-TV 6 reports. The fire was later determined to be arson. The bar - restaurant had opened in 1730 along Bristol Pike, an old Indian trail. It was first owned by Philip Amos. After he died, his widow continued operation of the Public House. Declaration of Independence signer John Adams stopped here three times between 1774 - 1776. The Inn was purchased by Matthias Fenton and wife Rachel in 1779. Washington's Army, under command of General Rochambeau, encamped here August - September 1781 while enroute to Yorktown. In recent history, the Bucks County government purchased the lot for $80,000 under Eminent Domain after the previous land owner was cited for numerous license violations. Bensalem then razed the remaining structures and seeded it until redevelopment. However, the site is on a flood plain that may prevent a proposed commercial office building at the site. A historic marker was erected September 2007 to remember the Inn and its history.
