BILLABONG XXL (Biggest wave of the year) Contest
If this year's Billabong XXL Awards are any indication, waves aren't the only things getting bigger. The known big-wave universe is growing as well. In addition to familiar big waves such as Maverick's and Todos Santos, XXL finalists have come in from spots that weren't even known about a decade ago, like Ghost Tree in Monterey, Shipstern's bluff in Tasmania or Playa Gris in Spain.

2008 BILLABONG XXL GLOBAL BIG WAVE AWARDS NOMINEES
NEWPORT BEACH, CA, USA -- (March 21, 2008) - After what has been the greatest year yet in big wave surfing, nominees for the 2008 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards have been decided in California. Considered the Oscars of big wave riding, the XXL Awards take place April 11 in Anaheim, California and feature over $130,000 in cash and prizes.
In contention for the XXL Ride of the Year Award are three amazing tube rides at Tahiti's legendary break of Teahupoo ("cho-poo") by local MANOA DROLLET ("Droll-lay") and two Hawaiian surfers, IAN WALSH of Maui and SHANE DORIAN of the Big Island. Brazilian CARLOS BURLE ("Boor-lay") was nominated for his tense moment in the curl at Ghost Tree off Pebble Beach, California while young Australian BRENNAN was acknowledged for his airborne entry into a huge barrel at Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania. BILLABONG XXL AWARDS MONSTER SWELL, TEAHUPO'O TAHITI
Dare devil surfers from around the globe have converged on the small Pacific island of Tahiti to ride the swell of the year at the famed Teahupoo (Cheo-poo) reef break.
A handful of die hard chargers including Hawaiian Big Wave legend SHANE DORIAN, local Teahupoo specialist MANOA DROLLET (Drol-Lay) and Australian ace DYLAN LONGBOTTOM (Gold Coast) conquered monstrous 6m waves in ideal conditions.
The heaving left hander which is recognised as the heaviest wave on earth, breaks over razor sharp coral reef and due to the velocity of the swells, surfers must be towed in with the assistance of Personal Water Craft (PWC).
While a number of crews descended on the break, it was the local experience of DROLLET coupled with the mind blowing antics of DORIAN who dominated the session, riding the biggest and deadliest waves.
The surfers are all vying for contention in the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards which recognise the biggest and most challenging waves captured on film and imagery in a 12 month period and carry a $USD 92,500 total prize pool.
