Serial blasts in Assam
At least 48 people were killed and over 300 injured in 13 serial blasts which rocked busy areas of Guwahati and three other districts in Assam on Thursday. ( Watch ) "A total of 48 people were killed in the blasts and 300 injured," Subhas Das, a top home ministry official in Assam state, said. The blasts took place at Ganeshguri and district court close to the chief minister's residence, Fancy Bazaar, Dispur Road and Pan Bazaar area in Guwahati. Blasts also occurred in other districts of Assam including Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon. ( Watch ) At least 25 persons have died in Guwahati which witnessed four blasts while 10 others were killed in Kokrajhar town where three explosions occurred, three were killed in Barpeta where three bombs exploded and two died in Bongaigaon when one bomb exploded, police said, adding the toll is feared to rise as more bodies were suspected to be buried in the debris at the blast sites, adding the condition of the several of the injured is serious. A red alert had been sounded across the state following the high intensity explosions that occurred almost simultaneously at around 11.30 am triggering fires in many areas. Most of the blasts were in crowded markets. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC have been promulgated in Guwahati following the blasts which the police suspect to be the handiwork of the banned ULFA and HUJI extremists. The first blast in Guwahati occurred at a vegetable and fruit market at Ganeshguri in a high security zone near the flyover with a court as well as offices and homes of senior police officials adjacent to the secretariat and the Assembly. The blast caused a major fire in the area with smoke engulfing the entire market and nearby places. The second bomb exploded in front of the Kamrup district deputy commissioner's office, injuring many and destroying several cars parked there, the sources said. The third explosion rocked areas near the police station of the busy Fancy Bazar, triggering panic among shoppers, many of whom were injured, the sources said. Guwahati Superintendent of Police G P Singh said that police and fire brigade were engaged in controlling the fire. In Kokrajhar, the explosives were suspected to have been planted in a two-wheeler. The nature of explosives is still unknown; visuals however show the explosives appear to be of high-intensity and more powerful than those used in other attacks in the country. The Assam government suspects the ULFA may be behind the attack along with HuJI terrorists but says it is too early to reach a conclusion. Intelligence sources say that inputs of a terror threat were given to Assam specifically. "The impact of the blast was so huge, a packed bus got half burnt and we pulled out lot of injured people and sent them to hospital," Pankaj Goswami, a witness at a blast in Guwahati, said. In Guwahati, crowds angry with the attacks pelted police with stones. Dozens of people were wounded in skirmishes with police. At one place, police fired in the air to disperse an angry mob. Union Home Ministry team will visit Assam for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation following the serial blasts, said Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta. An emergency meet has been convened by the home ministry to review the situation. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also cut short his Maharashtra trip. A Cabinet meet scheduled for 6pm will be dominated by the Assam blasts.

Ron Paul Blasts Secret Government Running Economy
9/18/2008 Congressman Ron Paul has issued a stinging address concerning the financial crisis in which he outlines how the current economic problems, created via malinvestment and shift to a debt based economy, are now being mismanaged by private interests in secret. Whats more he says he is not sure the Federal Reserve has any idea what to do next and that the Congress is totally oblivious to the whole sorry state of affairs - a cocktail of elements he warns puts the middle class of America in serious jeopardy. Today we had a lot of financial fireworks in the markets, a lot of things are going on, and I think we are in the middle of something very big. the Congressman stated. Speaking on the recent collapse and government bailout of several big financial institutions he warned: Were talking about big bucks, were not talking about hundreds of millions or even hundreds of billions, were talking about trillions of dollars, the obligation is immeasurable. The interesting thing is that they (the financial institutions) dont come to the Congress, I mean the Federal Reserve buys them out, they own it. We as tax payers now own Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and know one knows how much that will cost. They dont come to the Congress, we dont have appropriations, its done by secret government, private individuals behind the scenes maneuvering and manipulating and trying to patch things up. While in the meantime, Im sure theres a few people making a couple of bucks out of this whole thing. The Congressman highlighted how an economy structured on debt and credit and a financial system based on interventionism and self serving moral hazard has led to gross devaluation of the dollar and ultimately lies at the root of the current financial meltdown. Our problems come first of all from the Federal Reserve. It is a monopoly and it controls interest rates artificially low, causes people to make mistakes, thats the basic source. But then on top of that in the Housing market we had the community reinvestment act which told investors that they had to loan to risky borrowers, and that was a risky complication. HUD contributes to this, FDIC contributes, its called moral hazard, everything that we have done over here creates moral hazard, that is we assure people or assume that we will take care of everybody, just go out and create the risk, it is the opposite of the market place. Paul stated. You cant create money like were doing in order to support the dollar, because ultimately it hurts the dollar and everything we do in Washington today whether its on the appropriations side, whether its what the Fed is doing, buying up America, its all putting pressure on the dollar. One of these days were just going to have to wake up and say that we need to liquidate debt. This is malinvestment. he urged. The Congressman then slammed those who have blamed the crisis on failures of the free market: And then they have people come along and say see, this is the failure of capitalism, this has nothing to do with capitalism, this is something that started off as interventionism and us being too involved in the economy for the benefit of special interests. But now it is being socialized out in the open. The end of this comes when people reject the dollar and I think were getting awfully close to this. Paul stated echoing comments from leading investors such as Jim Rogers, who predicted Monday that the dollar would soon lose its world reserve status. When you see the movement in the markets that we have today, you know that there are serious problems out there and Congress basically are oblivious, they have no idea whats going on. Paul continued. As a matter of fact Im not even sure the Federal Reserve has any idea what to do about this. Theyve been manipulating and maneuvering for their own benefit over the years but eventually the market wins out. The Congressmans comments were echoed today by reports indicating that the Congress cannot agree on any form of action and is likely to simply adjourn and get out of the way. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters that no one knows what to do. In a stark warning, Ron Paul stressed that the longer the value of the dollar is allowed to depreciate, the greater the risk becomes for the majority of Americans: The reason this is so important is that if you care about people in a humanitarian sense, what you want to do is protect the value of the money. Just think of the third world nations when they have total run away inflation, the middle class gets wiped out. And what we are seeing today is the middle class being jeopardized by this type of system that we have, unlimited spending, unlimited debt, unlimited creation of new credit. So its time that we wake up The answers are in the free market, sound money and our Constitution. Paul concluded. Watch the full address by the Congressman:

Sen. Barbara Boxer blasts Mccain VP pick - Sarah Palin
Barbara Boxer writes: Two days ago, as two of our country's biggest investment houses stood on the brink of failure, Senator John McCain told an audience in Florida that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong." It sent cold shivers down my spine. The fundamentals of our economy are not strong. People are hurting. The income of average families has dropped while the cost of living has increased. Job growth under the Bush administration has been the slowest since Herbert Hoover. We lost 84,000 jobs last month alone. And the fundamentals of this economy are strong? He sounded a lot like Herbert Hoover, who told America the day after the stock market crash that began the Great Depression that "the fundamental business of the country, that is the production and distribution of commodities, is on a sound and prosperous basis." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sen-barbara-boxer/the-fundamentals-of-the-e_b_127128.html Sarah Palin is beginning to seem like quite an unusual woman, and I'm not talking about her love of guns and "snow machines," her faith, her family or any of the presumably non-elite attributes that we in the "elite media" are accused of savaging. Wrongly accused, I should add; reporters are doing nothing more sinister than trying to find out who she is, how she thinks and what she has done in office. You'll recall that in her Republican convention speech, Palin burnished her budget-hawk credentials by claiming she had said "thanks but no thanks" to a congressional earmark that would have paid most of the cost. A quick check of the public record showed that Palin supported the bridge when she was running for governor, continued to support it once she took office and dropped her backing only after the project -- by then widely ridiculed as an example of pork-barrel spending -- was effectively dead on Capitol Hill. In her interview with ABC's Charles Gibson, Palin 'fessed up. It was "not inappropriate" for a mayor or a governor to work with members of Congress to obtain federal money for infrastructure projects, she argued. "What I supported," she said, "was the link between a community and its airport." Case closed. Except that on Saturday, days after the interview, Palin said this to a crowd in Nevada: "I told Congress thanks but no thanks to that Bridge to Nowhere -- that if our state wanted to build that bridge, we would build it ourselves." I'm not shocked to learn that politicians sometimes lie. To cite an example that comes immediately to mind, John McCain's campaign ads attacking Barack Obama have taken such liberties that even Karl Rove says he wonders if they've gone too far. But it's weird for a politician -- or anyone else, really -- to maintain that an assertion is true after admitting that it isn't true. And quite a legend it's turning out to be. The Post reported Sunday that as mayor of tiny Wasilla, Palin pressured the town librarian to remove controversial books from the shelves, cut funds for the town museum but somehow found the money for a new deputy administrator slot and told city employees not to talk to reporters. And the New York Times reported Sunday that as governor, Palin appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to a $95,000-a-year job as head of the State Division of Agriculture. Havemeister "cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency," the Times reported, noting her as one of at least five schoolmates to whom Palin has given high-paying jobs in state government. Nothing against cows. Nothing against high-school BFFs and being true to your school. But a different picture of Sarah Palin is beginning to emerge. The McCain campaign would like us to see a straight-talking, gun-toting, moose-eviscerating, lipstick-wearing frontierswoman. Instead, we're beginning to discern an ambitious, opportunistic politician who makes no bones about rewarding friends and punishing those who stand in her way -- and who believes that truth is nothing more, and nothing less, than what she says it is. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/15/AR2008091502471.html
