The Fortunes-(cover) Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again
my version of the sixties classic- Sully
Biography
Following in the wake of Merseybeat, and the R&B of The Rolling Stones, The Fortunes added another dimension to the sound of pop, with their sophisticated orchestration, dual lead vocals and well worked counter-melodies.
The result was a succession of distinctive hits including "You've Got Your Troubles", "Here It Comes Again" (both 1965), and "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again"; even continuing into the 1970s with more globally successful releases such as "Storm in a Teacup" and "Freedom Come, Freedom Go".
Originally a trio called The Cliftones, their first single "Summertime Summertime" went unnoticed, but the follow-up in 1964, "Caroline", was used as the signature tune for the influential Pirate Radio station Radio Caroline. The Fortunes had a steady succession of world-wide hits culminating in 1972, with the release of "Storm in a Teacup". During this period, The Fortunes were also the voices for American Coca-Cola advertisements. Their first recording in 1967 was a version of the theme Things Go better With Coke but their most remembered for introducing 1969 new slogan recording used as the main theme on Coke radio and TV commercials It's The Real Thing.
[edit] Present day history
Founding member, and lead vocalist, Allen has continued fronting an ever changing version of The Fortunes since 1963.
The Fortunes were awarded a gold disc in 1987, for over 100,000 sales of their All The Hits and More album.
In March 1995 vocalist/keyboard/guitar player Bob Jackson was added to The Fortunes' ranks. Jackson, who was a former member of the group Badfinger, now leads the band through a tribute to his former group, including a version of the Badfinger-penned classic "Without You", made famous by Harry Nilsson, and more recently Mariah Carey. A more recent addition to The Fortunes present day personnel is Geoff Turton. He was originally a member of the Birmingham based band, The Rockin' Berries who had hits with "He's In Town" and "Poor Man's Son". He also had a certain amount of success under the 'nom de plume' Jefferson both at home and in the U.S.
The Fortunes continue to tour to this day, appearing on the nostalgia circuit. The UK line-up features those who appeared on their popular 60s recordings; but there is also a touring U.S. group that features none of the original hit-makers.

The Jamies - Summertime, Summertime
The Jamies were an American doo wop group from New York. Their "Summertime, Summertime" is one of those songs you only have to hear once for it to live rent-free in your mind forever. The bouncy doo wop novelty, which featured a harpsichord prominently in the mix, surely provided inspiration for later novelty groups like the Village People and Sha Na Na to perform songs in the same campy style. The New York-based group derived its name from lead singer Thomas Earl Jameson, who wrote the song with the lyrics "Summertime, summertime/sum, sum, summertime" with Sherman Feller; the pair also collaborated on the flip side "Searching for You." The 45, released in 1958 on Epic, became one of the most popular summer songs of all time. It broke the Top 40 but stopped short of the Top 20 by six rungs at number 26, on September 22, 1958.
"Summertime, Summertime"'s follow-up, "Snow Train" (written by Feller) b/w "When the Sun Goes Down" (written by Jameson) failed to chart and slowed the Jamies' roll to a virtual stop. A switch to United Artists was hardly a panacea, as "Don't Darken My Door," written by Larry Jaspon and Vicki Gay, stiffed (along with the flip side, Jameson's "The Evening Star") in 1959. The Jamies had numerous personnel changes: Robert Paolucci joined shortly after "Summertime, Summertime" hit, he became a monk afterward, but eventually left that calling to work as a translator. When they couldn't find another hit, the Jamies went to the well again with "Summertime, Summertime" and broke the Top 40 with it for the second time on August 4, 1962, at number 38.
A year later, the Fortunes (formerly the Cliftones) redid the song for their first release on Decca Records. But they weren't the only ones. The infectious ditty has also been redone by the Doodletown Pipers, Hobby Horse, Jan & Dean, the Legendary Masked Surfers, Mongo Jerry, and Sha Na Na. In addition, Buick and Applebee Restaurants both revitalized the song in their commercials.

The Cleftones - Again
Far be it for me to say, but as doo wop groups go, I think The Cleftones are highly underatted. Even though their time came slightly later than other doo wop groups, they are still regarded as a highly influential outfit on black music with a large (still existing) following. This is a seldom heard track 'Again' by The Cleftones. You have probably heard the more famous tracks such as Heart and Soul, Little Girl of Mine, Cant We Be Sweethearts etc but hopefully by this post the strength of their other tracks will be shown. The Cleftones style is mostly uptempo east coast doo wop which - (after watching GoodFellas with 'Cant We Be Sweethearts' in the background) - got me hooked on Doo Wop. The Cleftones are my favourite doo wop outfit as their tracks always have perfect harmonies and meaningful heartfelt lyrics topped off by Herb Cox's fantastic lead singing. They were formed in 1955 at Jamaica High School, Queens, NYC. The original line up was Herbie Cox (lead), Charlie James (first tenor), Berman Patterson, (second tenor), William McClane (baritone), and Warren Corbin (bass). They were originally called the Silvertones. Initial charted hits by the group started in 1955, "You Baby You", Little Girl of Mine", "Cant We Be Sweethearts". In 1961 the 2nd generation of Cleftones produced hits consisting of members Herb Cox, Charlie James, Warren Corbin, Gene Pearson, and Pat Spann. They reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with Heart and Soul. They are still touring and performing to this day with Herb Cox still singing lead.

The Cleftones - Can't We Be Sweethearts
This is the song which got me hooked on doo wop. After hearing this on GoodFellas, I was blown away by the opening bass and following harmonies and I just wanted to hear more! This, in my humble opinion, is the best doo wop song along with The Crows - Gee. After hearing a lot of doo wop I still beleive that The Cleftones have turned out a huge amount of brilliant tracks, yet their relative lack of success must be down to the wealth of talent that was around at that time I guess. Anyway, enjoy!
