ELBE IN FALL, SOMETHING FOR YOUR SOUL
The Elbe rises at an elevation of about 1,400 metres (4,593 ft) in the Krkonoše (also known as Giant Mountains or in German as Riesengebirge) on the north west borders of the Czech Republic. Of the numerous small streams whose waters compose the infant river, the most important is the Bílé Labe, or White Elbe. After plunging down the 60 metres (197 ft) of the Labský vodopád, the latter stream unites with the steeply torrential Malé Labe, and thereafter the united stream of the Elbe pursues a southerly course, emerging from the mountain glens at and continuing on to Pardubice, where it turns sharply to the west. At Kolín some 43 kilometres (27 mi) further on, it bends gradually towards the north-west. Die Elbe (Tschechisch: Labe) ist ein mitteleuropäischer Strom, der in Tschechien entspringt, durch Deutschland fließt und in die Nordsee mündet. Sie ist der einzige Fluss, der das von Mittelgebirgen umschlossene Böhmen zur Nordsee hin entwässert. Zu bekannten Gewässern ihres Einzugsgebiets gehören die Moldau, die Spree und die Saale sowie die Müritz. Labe (německy Elbe) je jednou z největších řek a vodních cest Evropy. Pramení v Krkonoších na severu Čech, protéká Německem a ústí do Severního moře. Je to jediná česká řeka, jejíž český název není ženského rodu (v němčině však je ženského rodu). Je 1154 km dlouhá (v Česku 358,3 km). Povodí má rozlohu 144 055 km² (v Česku 51 394 km²). Na svém soutoku s Vltavou má nižší průtok a je od svého pramene kratší, ale přesto se nepovažuje za její přítok.
