Carl Ngalkanbuy | Yirdaki master from Elcho Island
Carl Ngalkanbuy is a highly respected yirdaki player from Galiwin'ku, Elcho Island. He is considered by many leading yirdaki players from the Miwatj region of Arnhem Land as Elcho Island's best of the best. Ngalkanbuy was previously in another YouTube video of mine which can be seen in the following link - note that the spelling Carl (rather than Karl) is correct:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6z5fLYvzIM
The yirdaki played by Carl in this clip is his own private instrument. He has used it recreationally and ceremonially. It plays in the key of F sharp fundamental with a G sharp overtone and like many private instruments belonging to ceremonial yirdaki players, it has been 'taped up' along its entire length with duct tape, this time in the Aboriginal colours of red, yellow and black.
This was among the finest and most cherished instrument I collected on a recent field trip during a prolonged visit to Arnhem Land extending almost 3 months. It is the first yirdaki I have purchased directly from Ngalkanbuy which was a thrill in itself, the legend that he is and the esteem he is accorded by many Yolngu.
During the recording session, Ngalkanbuy declared that he was getting old and not as good as he used to be. Evidence of grey hairs and white stubble on his chin attested to his advancing years. But I reckon he is still a darn hot player. Some say he was Elcho Island's equivalent of the late Mr M. Mununggurr.
Expect more video uploads soon... the 3 months away was fruitful and I recorded more Yolngu yirdaki players than ever before. Sorry for the long absence of new uploads over recent months... will make up for it, I promise.

Adam Marrilaga | Yirdaki Wiz from Elcho Island
This is Adam Marrilaga, or 'Laga' for short, a 19 year old yirdaki talent from Galiwin'ku, Elcho Island, NE Arnhem Land.
Laga first learnt yirdaki from Wurduku (Larry Winiwini) when he was but a child. Winiwini tells me that he played yirdaki onto Laga's back to pass on his teachings; the results are now apparent for all to hear and see! Laga has grown into an accomplished yirdaki player in his own right and has a special talent above and beyond most yirdakimirr in Arnhem Land. He was recently at M*lk*y's funeral where he participated as a key yirdaki player.
Laga is of the Dhalwangu clan. His mother clan is Galpu, his own mother being Gaypardi. His father is deceased.
A shy, somewhat reserved and quietly-spoken young man with a gentle temperament, Laga is able to play a variety of styles; furthermore, he has the uncanny ability to mimic the styles of other well-known accomplished yirdaki players from throughout eastern Arnhem Land. His knowledge of song material is extensive and growing. His technical execution is brilliant, backed by his understanding of the intricacies of technique and the mechanics required to play certain rhythms and to achieve particular acoustic outcomes.
We're pleased to bits to bring Adam Marrilaga to YouTube and to be the first to showcase and to promote his extraordinary skill.
Enjoy!

Nelson Dhapan Yunupingu | Elcho Island yidaki genius
I'd been searching for Dhapan for several months now, and finally caught up with him. I was first introduced to Dhapan by Makuma Yunupingu, and was impressed by the way Makuma spoke of him, Makuma being an accomplished yidaki player himself having been a previous member of Yothu Yindi and ear-marked as a potential front-man of the band should Mandawuy hand over the reins.
Dhapan is a Gumatj man who lives at Galiwin'ku, Elcho Island. He is married to Sophia Gurruwiwi who was a backing singer for Yothu Yindi band for many years.
Dhapan's father, Harry Landhuni, was an expert yidaki player who specialised in the djartpangarri genre. Landhuni appeared in the popular Australian television series "Skippy" and has toured domestically and internationally as a yidaki player.

Timothy Litalita Ganambarr, Elcho Island yidaki player
This is Timothy Litalita, a Ngaymil clansman who has been highly regarded as a yirdaki player at Elcho Island though he is less active these days. He has toured with the Ratjpa Dancers and has also been a key ceremonial player in his earlier days.
This recording was done in 2004 and is placed here on YouTube as part of our effort to acknowledge and to give recognition to all the Arnhem Land yidaki and mago players who have helped iDIDJ Australia on its journey. Thank you Lita! Nhaku nhe gulyundja?
