Διάφοροι ρυπαντές όπως διοξείδιο του άνθρακα, οξείδια του αζώτου , μεθάνιο , χλωροφθοράνθρακες και το όζον σχηματίζουν ένα είδος φράγματος που καλύπτει τη γη και λειτουργεί σαν την γυάλινη οροφή του θερμοκηπίου , το φράγμα αυτό επιτρέπει την είσοδο της ηλιακής ακτινοβολίας και αποτρέπει την διαφυγή θερμικής ακτινοβολίας προς το διάστημα. Η παραπάνω λειτουργία συμβάλει στην αύξηση της μέσης ατμοσφαιρικής θερμοκρασίας.
Σημαντική ευθύνη από όλους τους ρυπαντές έχει το διοξείδιο του άνθρακα το οποίο είναι υπεύθυνο για το 50% της αύξησης ενώ για το υπόλοιπο ευθύνονται οι άλλοι ρυπαντές . Έχει υπολογισθεί ότι από το τέλος του περασμένου αιώνα μέχρι σήμερα έχει αυξηθεί η μέση ατμοσφαιρική θερμοκρασία κατά 0,6 βαθμούς Κελσίου. Προβλέπεται από πολλούς επιστήμονες ότι το 2070 θα έχει αυξηθεί κατά 3 βαθμούς Κελσίου, αυτή η αύξηση θα καταστήσει τη γη θερμή όσο ήταν πριν από 2 εκατομμύρια χρόνια. Η αύξηση αυτή της θερμοκρασίας θα προκαλέσει λιώσιμο των πάγων και αύξηση της στάθμης των ωκεανών κατά ένα μέτρο. Υπάρχουν πολλές περιοχές της γης όπου η επιφάνεια του εδάφους δεν υπερβαίνει τα δύο μέτρα όπως για παράδειγμα στο Μπαγκλαντές όπου το 18% της έκτασης θα βρίσκεται κάτω από το νερό το έτος 2050. www.prasino.gr

The planet is suffering from high fever and its thermometer can be found in Greenland. In this vast land of ice which is now melting at a great speed (248 cubic kilometers of snow each year) all that we hear on the news and read about in the newspapers constitutes the everyday life of its few inhabitants.
The Inuit, better known to us as Eskimos, watch helpless as their life changes dramatically and their Arctic civilization receives what is probably the worst blow in its centuries long, frozen history. Traditionally hunters and fishermen, they watch as their pray disappears and their moving about becomes more and more dangerous due to the fragile ice and the unexpected weather changes. The creators of this penetrating documentary spent days in isolated communities in Greenland, recording the life of the native Inuit. They also present new climate research results, more pessimistic than ever, while uncovering the new and regrettable "el dorado" of oil companies who are preparing to drill for black gold in the planet's most vulnerable area.
