Glacier Surfing Alaska
World champion big wave surfers, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala rode into surfing history last week when they towed into a monster tsunami created by Child's Glacier in South-Central Alaska.
The creator/producer, Ryan Casey, "disovered" the wave in 1995, while on location shooting in Alaska. Then after finishing his last film, Quest, a documentary on big wave surfing, he showed Garrett the wave... that was six months ago. So after a short scout in June, we went up in August to film this...

Hundreds strip naked on glacier in global warming protest
Read more:
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/naked-glacier-tunick-08182007
Parental warning: Contains (very tasteful) nudity.
Six hundred people shed their clothes on a glacier in the Swiss Alps to bodily cry out for help against a planetary emergency: global warming.
The nude volunteers posed for us and renowned naked "installation" artist Spencer Tunick on the Aletsch Glacier.
Without clothes, the human body is vulnerable, exposed, its life or death at the whim of the elements. Global warming is stripping away our glaciers and leaving our entire planet vulnerable to extreme weather, floods, sea-level rise, global decreases in carrying capacity and agricultural production, fresh water shortages, disease and mass human dislocations.
If global warming continues at its current rate, most glaciers in Switzerland will completely disappear by 2080, leaving nothing but valleys and slopes strewn with rock debris.

The World Bank - Climate Change, Peru: Retreating Glacier
In Pucarumi, a small community in the foothills of the snow-capped Peruvian Andes, Felipe mulls the fate of the life-giving Ausangate glacier. Year after year, the great white glacier of his boyhood has receded and slowly turned black.
"We are feeling the effects of climate change," says Felipe, an alpaca herder whose animals graze on pastures irrigated by Ausangate's waters. "This loss of snow means we receive less water. This climatic factor is causing us great danger."
Less water has meant less pasture and more difficulty raising livestock. Animals such as alpaca and sheep aren't eating enough, "so their wool doesn't grow as well," forcing people to turn to synthetic wool to weave hats, sweaters, and scarves.

Argentina Glacier
ANCHOR:
Perito Moreno ruptures during wintertime for the first time since 1917. Scientists caution against linking the rupture to global climate change. Here's more on the story.
STORY:
The Perito Moreno glacier is in the southern Argentine region known as Patagonia. Its a mere few kilometers from the tourist city of El Calafate in the Santa Cruz Province. The Perito Moreno glacier is one of the forty seven glaciers that extends over the Southern Arm of Lake Argentina.
[Female Santa Cruz Resident]:
"I would really like it if more people were able to enjoy what we in El Calafate live with, and the truth is that it really would be great if more people from Argentina were able to come to enjoy this."
The last time the glacier ruptured during the wintertime was in 1917. Now, for the first time in all those years, it will happen again. The rupture that began on July 4th is the first registered since March, 2006. The prior two happened in 1988 and 2004 during February and March. These are summer months in Argentina. Its very rare for the glacier to rupture later than this because of cooler temperatures. Despite the temptation to link the unusual occurrence to global climate change, several Argentine scientists insist that the rupture has more to do with the particular alignment of the Perito Moreno glacier and the surrounding land. Climate change as a cause is all the less likely as an explanation, given that the Perito Merino glacier happens to be the only major Argentine glacier that still maintains a mass balance between water gained and lost throughout the year's seasonal changes. The Perito Moreno glacier is three kilometers wide, extends roughly two hundred cubic kilometers below the sea, and measures on average seventy meters above the level of the Lake Argentina in which it's located.
