Jerry Garcia & David Grisman - Two Soldiers
Jerry Garcia, chitarrista, leader, anima e forse qualcosa in più dei "Grateful Dead" e David Grisman, polistrumentista e soprattutto grande mandolinista, incidono nella primavera del 1991 il loro primo omonimo album ("Jerry Garcia / David Grisman") per la neonata Acoustic Disc con l'aiuto di Joe Craven alle percussioni e di Jim Kerwin al basso. Il disco è eccellente e ottiene recensioni estremamente lusinghiere. In effetti, la chitarra e la voce di Jerry si fondono efficacemente con il mandolino di David. Il repertorio di questo CD è vario, si va dal pop americano al blues, fino ad arrivare alla splendida melodia tradizionale di "Two Soldiers", per poi passare alla dawg music, per giungere infine all'improvvisata e orientaleggiante "Arabia", il brano più sperimentale del compact. Jerry canta bene e la sua voce raggiunge vette di lirismo notevole specialmente in "Two Soldiers", quasi commovente. Questa canzone mi dà lo spunto per essere dedicata a tutti i soldati americani che in una guerra giusta o ingiusta (sarà la Storia a decretarlo) combattuta in Iraq ed in Afghanistan, hanno perso la vita o sono rimasti invalidi. Stando alle ultime stime, i militari americani deceduti hanno toccato la cifra di quattromila, senza tener conto di quelli che si sono suicidati una volta tornati a casa, quelli che hanno subito dei danni al fisico ed altri che soffrono di turbe psichiche. Una cosa è certa e non lo dico per piaggeria, per avere qualche amico americano in più o per esterofilismo, ma perchè è il mio cuore che me lo fa dire: io amo questi giovani, amo tutti i giovani che per servire la loro Patria sono disposti a sacrificare il bene più prezioso che Dio ha dato loro e cioè la Vita.
This song gives me the opportunity to dedicate to all American soldiers that, in a just or unjust war (will be the History to decree) fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, have lost their lives or have been disabled. According to the latest estimates, the American soldiers killed are four thousand, without taking into account those who have committed suicide after returning home, those who have suffered physical damage and others who suffer from mental disorders. One thing is certain, and I say it not to add any american friend or for xenophilia, but because it is my heart that say this: I love these young people, I love all the young people that are willing to sacrifice the precious gift of Life to serve their Country.
