In space no one can hear you scream. But if you're two young Italian brothers messing about with radio transmitters on Earth, you can hear the voice of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space; the heartbeat of Laika, the first dog in space; and signals from Sputnik1, the first satellite. Space Hackers is the fascinating tale of Achille and Giovanbattista Judica-Cordiglia, who have amassed an incredible archive of the space race dating from the 1950s. While many of their peers were living la dolce vita, these adorable geeks were holed up in a bedroom eavesdropping, a hobby they dedicated their lives to. Their story is captivating by itself but what makes this documentary even more special is these amateur cinema enthusiasts filmed their own history on Super8, as if anticipating their lives might one day be documented in film. (Don't we all?) As they say, their collection of space recordings is unique to the world but it is also unique to them "because it contains our youth, which is very dear to us". Bless. Never have someone else's home movies been so enthralling, surely. The brothers' aural fixation really took off in 1957 when a radio program was interrupted to say that the Soviets had successfully launched Sputnik1. They decided to see if they could pick up the frequency and bingo, managed to record the satellite's beeps. While no word from aliens, the brothers have had their share of dramatic and controversial claims, including recordings of the last words/breath of cosmonauts who allegedly died on secret Soviet space missions. They also listened in on the Americans, and the brothers' recollections about the launch of the first US satellite, Explorer, are just delightful: a neighbour complained about the racket they were making. Besides the enchanting home movies, Space Hackers has brilliant footage of the many launches and, of course, the moon landing. These brothers should be as famous as Neil Armstrong, from hear to eternity.
