Yellow Star Thistle Infestation
In discovering a new bicycle route on the freeway shoulder between Orinda and Fish Ranch Road on California Highway 24, I also discovered a lot of Yellow Star Thistle ("YST")growing along the road. This video documents the infestation, shows what YST is, what we're doing about it at our own nearby site, while calling on the stewards of the Highway 24 frontage to make similar efforts.

The video is 90 minutes long, and I only intended to watch the first few minutes, but couldn't stay off the edge of my seat for a full 60 minutes!! Some interesting facts that Dr. Joe DiTomaso presents in the video include:
[1] YST seeds are not carried more than a couple of feet by the wind.
[2] Hand pulling of spot and satellite YST infestations is worthwhile, but once seedheads are produced (after June or so) you are wasting your time if you leave the YST carcasses on the ground.
[3] Goat grazing is effective against YST. Sheep and cow grazing are effective to a lesser extent. YST is toxic to horses.
[4] Burning, where possible, is effective against YST and can help promote native plants and grasses. Burning is good against Ripgut Brome...
[5] A pesticide called "Transline" is effective for dealing with large-scale YST infestations; biological control with a couple of insects is helpful but only partially effective. "Round-Up" appears to be within the spectrum of recommended chemical control agents for YST...
[6] Dr. DiTomaso unbelievably indicates that YST has infested 15% to 20% of the total surface area of the State of California! He states that it has recently begun to move into the coastal areas... It is apparently more established in the Central Valley...

Red Roof Inn Bed Bug Infestation
On August 18 2008 , on our second night in this room we noticed these small bugs. When we looked further we got surprised. We had to change hotel in the middle of the night. Wife & son got bit the night before. Hope no body has to go through this horrible experience. We are still trying to get the hotel to check these bugs for disease.
