Keystone Cops - Bangville Police
The Keystone Cops was a series of silent film comedies featuring an incompetent group of policemen produced by Mack Sennett for his Keystone Film Company between 1912 and 1917. The idea came from Hank Mann, who also played police chief Tehiezel in the first film before being replaced by Ford Sterling. Their first film was Hoffmeyer's Legacy (1912) but their popularity came from the 1913 feature The Bangville Police starring Mabel Normand. However, as early as 1914 Sennett shifted the cops from starring roles to background ensemble, in support of comedians like Charlie Chaplin and Fatty Arbuckle.

Dave Douglas & Keystone - MOONSHINE
This is an unfinished fragment made in May 1918 by Roscoe Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. I liked the stillness of the landscape, and how it contrasts with the frenetic performances of Keaton, Arbuckle, Al St. John and Alice Lake. I'm always a sucker for a good gag, and this film seems to move from one to the next without overmuch concern for plot. For the sake of useless trivia this seems to be the first film to pack twenty people into a late model car, only to send them off into the woods. It's a fun watch. -Dave Douglas

This is Charlie Chaplin's first film, released on 2 February 1914. Do not look for the Little Tramp! Chaplin plays a lady-charming swindler, Edgar English, who runs afoul of the Keystone Kops. Chaplin's famed screen persona of "the Little Tramp" did not appear until the film "Kid Auto Races at Venice," made that same year.
