Antarctica Time lapse: A Year on Ice
A better quality copy of this clip can be found at my photo site: www.antarcticimages.com
Blog: www.frozensouth.com
Time-lapse video filmed in Antarctica, in and around McMurdo Station and Scott Base.
Each year the sun is below the horizon for 4 months in the middle of winter, and above the horizon for 4 months in summer. During the couple of months in between we have more-or-less normal days.
Includes shots of auroras and the very rare polar stratospheric nacreous clouds, which form when ozone depleting gases crystallize in the upper atmosphere in the intense cold.
Summer population is about 1200 people, winter about 200.
This is just a small sample of an ongoing project to collect time-lapse imagery of Antarctica. I have taken over 1,000,000 individual photos and worn out a number of cameras that make up the collection of footage I have gathered so far over the last 6 years. Eventually a film will be released, keep an eye on my user page for more info in the future.
Check out my other videos as well for more of life on the Ice.
For those of you who have been asking about the music I used here, the first piece of music is "Whirl-Y-Reel" by Afro Celt Sound System, the second is "The Grand Finale" from the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack by Danny Elfman. Both are available at most music outlets.

Koya Moments / An Edinburgh time lapse movie
Philip Glass
Violin Concerto, 1st movement
Adele Anthony, violin
Ulster Orchestra
Naxos CD 8.554568
In tribute to Ron Fricke who filmed Koyaanisqatsi ( one of my favourite films) This film charts the progress of the day and night, the changing light, weather and progress of the moon and stars . Enjoy ( do enjoy as it took two years to make!)
Technical assistance was by Alistair Meldrum who provided the specs for the pans and other things well beyond me, drove me places and had to give up a lot of his own time-lapse due to me getting there first.
Music ( shamefully I forgot to add this to the final version credits) Phillip Glass from his violin concerto.
Video editing - greatly helped by Rene Orielly who pointed the way to good editing and who was not at all shy by giving rough comments ( and i like that)
Video testers- David Watt, Dougie Nicol, Janet McSherry, Ian Wishart, Ian Hartley ( if its crap, they have no problem telling me so).

Burningman 2007 Time-Lapse
Time Lapse Video of the 2007 Burning Man festival as viewed from the Block Rock Solar "Powertainer". Be sure and check out the Sequel video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4FxBqHGGq4
Interesting note: You can actually see the Crude Awakening Oil Derrick go up even though it's about 3/4 mile away! There is a brilliant flash that illuminates the scene. Here is a high resolution still: http://mindfart.com/pic/?crudeawakeningshadow
Background:
I was originally asked by Tom Price to do this timelapse, and I thought it was an awesome idea. It's been done before by the Folding-Time guys, but they didn't set up this year. The images were captured by a Canon G3 mounted in a weatherproof housing of my own design up on a 20 foot pole next to the Powertainer. There were 18,486 images shot at 2272x1704 which is almost 4 megapixels each. Some of the full-size stills are stunning! The camera was controlled by a custom Daemon I wrote using the Gphoto library, which ran on the Powertainer's Slackware linux system and the images were stored full-size on a hard drive. After the event, I ran another piece of code that downsampled the images to 640x480 then composed them at 30fps into a MPEG-4 video. My friend Tom Sepe added the Music and Titles for me and Voila! I hope to make a more portable rig for future use incorporating an embedded linux system and flash memory. Contact me for more information, to hire me for interesting geekery, or just to geek out. =)
