Matthias Sindelar 1
Matthias Sindelar (10 de febrero de 1903 - 23 de enero de 1939) es considerado por muchos como el más grande futbolista austriaco de todos los tiempos. Lo llamaban El Mozart del fútbol por su elegancia en el juego.
El hombre que eventualmente serÃa votado como el deportista austriaco del siglo nació en el seno de una familia judÃa pobre y comenzó a jugar fútbol en las calles de Viena, donde se ganarÃa el apodo de Hombre de Papel por su extraordinaria habilidad para pasar entre los defensores rivales.
A los 15 años fichó por el Hertha Viena, antes de entrar al primer equipo del Austria Viena, guiándolos a la conquista de tres Copas de Austria en sus tres primeras temporadas en el club.
En 1926 Sindelar debutó por la selección austriaca, convirtiendo el gol de la victoria en el triunfo por 2-1 sobre Checoslovaquia. Luego marcarÃa en dos oportunidades en la goleada por 7-1 sobre Suiza. En total, Sindelar jugarÃa 44 veces por su paÃs, anotando 27 goles.
Sindelar se rehusó a jugar por la selección alemana después de la anexión de Austria a la Alemania nazi en 1938, y se negó a abandonar su paÃs después de tal hecho.
Fue encontrado muerto junto a su pareja en su departamento el 29 de enero de 1939. Los informes oficiales de la época indican que la causa de muerte fue suicidio por inhalación de monóxido de carbono.
