Mermaids is best described as an all-girl supergroup with Tobey Black and Maija Martin (formerly of VanCity Mint Records popsters The Gay) on drums and accordion respectively, as well as Lullabye Arkestra's Katia Taylor on powerhouse bass. It's still in the rudimentary stages, but their overall sound is mournful, lush art-pop, with ragged folk edges that stem from Martin's aching accordion and a guest violinist." (and guest back up vocals that night by Jennifer Castle [Castlemusic]).

Mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs
This 16MM home movie is from a vacationer at Weeki Wachee Springs, FL from 1952. For those of us who have never been to the springs, they are famous for dressing women up as mermaids and letting tourist oogle them from subteranean glass enclosures. The women breath from air hoses, eat apples and drink cokes. Pierce Pettis wrote a song about his dad's home movies of the women. And, the springs are still at it, mermaids and all.
