Spain has Europe's fastest growing immigrant population, but it is illegal immigration mainly from North Africa and Eastern Europe that causes the greatest controversy. Spain's Moroccan enclaves are an attractive destination for huge numbers of would-be immigrants from Africa. Similarly, as the borders of Europe have opened, large numbers of economic migrants have made their way to the peninsula.

Myanmar migrants face deportation - 11 April 08
Fifty-four migrants from Myanmar have suffocated in the back of a truck as they travelled illegally into Thailand.
Others sruvived, but the Thai authorities want to deport the survivors back to Myanmar.
Al Jazeera's Selina Downes reports from Ranong, in Southern Thailand.

Danwei TV Hard Hat Show: Together with Migrants
This episode of the Hard Hat Show is about migrant workers in Beijing. It includes interviews and footage of an event at Beijing's Jianwai Soho real esate development where an NGO called Hua Dan, together with UNESCO and the property developers, organized 'Together with Migrants'.
This day long event was intended to both teach and entertain migrant workers and inform the general public about their plight. In this episode of the Hard Hat Show, we speak to migrant workers as well as artists and organizers from the event, and find out what some of the workers think of the Jianwai Soho development and Pan Shiyi, the media figure and tycoon behind it.
This episode was shot by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, Hao Chong and Luke Mines, edited and with interviews by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, presented by Jeremy Goldkorn, with music by Fernando Fidanza. Pan Shiyi was not harmed in the making of this episode.

China's Desperate Migrants - Hong Kong
July 1997
Mothers are torn from husbands and children as Hong Kong's illegal immigrants are shipped back to mainland China. The Migrant Enquiry Centre is crammed with distressed families. A mother gestures angrily and shouts, ampther weeps at a deportation order which will force her to leave a sick husband. Police rush into an apartment and haul out a woman and her 8 year old child. Faced with a 20 year backlog of migrant applications, the Hong Kong authorities are giving deportations a high profile, trying to deter illegal immigrants. Mrs Kwok has already been deported five times. Each time she begs or bribes officials in China to return to her husband. Wheezing with lung cancer, he can't cope with their three children alone. At the Chinese border old ladies with suitcases run through the customs hall towards Hong Kong. Even if they qualify for Hong Kong residency only 150 are allowed a day. In her one room apartment, Mrs Chang proudly displays her permanent residency. It means her children can go to school. From a tour bus wealthy Chinese glimpse Hong Kong , touring China's new jewel, one most Chinese have heard of but few will ever see.

Libya a de facto shelter for African migrants - 12 Jul 08
While thousands of African risk their lives crossing to Europe every year, many from other parts of the continent stay on in North Africa because they've simply run out of money.
In Libya, undocumented migrants scratch out a living doing the jobs nobody else wants to do.
Amr El Kahky, in Tripoli, reports now on the migrants who got stuck on the road to a better life.
