2nd N.Y. Millionaire Gets Prison in Slavery Case
Plus2nd N.Y. Millionaire Gets Prison in Slavery Case2nd N.Y. Millionaire Gets Prison in Slavery CaseThe Associated PressA millionaire convicted of helping his wife keep two Indonesian housekeepers as virtual slaves was sentenced Friday to more than three years in prison. (June 27)A millionaire and his wife will now both spend time behind bars for virtually enslaving two Indonesian housekeepers. Mahender Sabhnani (sahb-NAH'-nee) was sentenced to more than three years and four months in prison Friday. It comes one day after he tearfully watched his wife received an 11-year sentence.SOT: "We were expecting that judge will let him go but under the circumstances, based on the guidelines, he did his best, so, we are not disappointed but we accept, we accept what the judge says." Bharat Jotwani, friend of Sabhnani family Prosecutors said she was primarily responsible for inflicting years of abuse on the poorly educated servants. But the judge said Sabhnani was aware of what was happening in his Long Island, New York home.SOT: THE JUDGE SAID THAT Mahender DIDN'T DO ANYTHING AND I'M NOT SURE THAT YOU CAN BE CONVICTED OF THESE SERIOUS CRIMES FOR SIMPLY NOT DOING ANYTHING ELSE. SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE GOING TO ADDRESS ON APPEAL AMONG OTHE RTHINGS Attorney Stephen Scaring During the trial, the victims testified they were beaten with brooms and umbrellas and slashed with knives for misdeeds including sleeping late or stealing food from the trash. The women also claim the couple took their passports so they couldn't flee. But one of the women did escape last May which eventually led to the Sabhnani's arrests. Sabhnani, who's originally from India, is an international perfume maker. He has grown children. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

NY Millionaire Gets Prison for Enslaving Workers
PlusNY Millionaire Gets Prison for Enslaving WorkersNY Millionaire Gets Prison for Enslaving WorkersThe Associated PressA millionaire who inflicted years of abuse on two Indonesian housekeepers held as virtual slaves in her Long Island mansion received an 11-year prison sentence on Thursday. (June 26)((Central Islip, New York)) An eleven year prison sentence for a multi-millionaire Long Island woman convicted of torturing her two maids. NATS: As demonstrators rallied outside, hoping the sentence would send a message to others who might mistreat women who work in the nation's underground economy. ((Rev. Allan Ramirez, Domestic Worker Advocate)) "Those who have been found guilty must pay the penalty, pay the price, they will be jailed and serve as an example to everyone else who seeks to exploit our poor women." The judge said he was shocked by Varsha Sabhnani's physical and mental abuse of the two poor women she brought over from Indonesia, who were forced to work for less than 100 dollars a month and kept in the country illegally with no English language skills. ((File)) But the sentence was less than some had predicted she'd receive. Her attorney argued for leniency, saying the maids exaggerated their stories of abuse and that Varsha was a good person who was suffering after going on a starvation diet to lose 190 pounds. ((Jeffrey Hoffman, Defense Attorney)) SOT One victim, known only as Samirrah, testified she had regularly been beaten, cut, tortured and starved for years, and that once, while she was praying, Varsha Sabhanani stopped her, saying "I am your God. I can make you dead." In local papers she had been dubbed Cruella de Ville, but she never took the witness stand in her own defense. But Varsha Sabhnani finally spoke in court Thursday before her sentenced was passed saying she was put on this earth to serve others and that she loved her children. On Friday, Varsha Sabhnani's husband, perfume exporter Mahender Sabhnani will be sentenced for his role in this modern-day case of slavery, but he is expected to receive less prison time than his wife. ((Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press)) ((Central Islip, New York)) Still undecided in this case is how much restitution money the Sabhnanis must pay to the two victims, Samirrah and Enung. The government is asking for one-point one million dollars each. But the defense is arguing that 200-thousand dollars each in back wages is more appropriate.
