Los moai de la Isla de Pascua

La isla de Pascua, de nombre indígena Rapa Nui, es uno de los lugares más remotos de la Tierra, distante 3.700 km de la costa americana. En su interior se guarda uno de los misterios más asombrosos, el de las grandes estatuas llamadas moai.
Hechos de toba volcánica, los moai, de los que se conocen cerca de 900, tienen una altura media de 5 m y 14 toneladas de peso, aunque el mayor pesa 80 toneladas. Su función debió ser ritual, pudiendo representar a antepasados importantes. Levantados alrededor de los siglos XII al XVII, varios moai se colocaban sobre plataformas llamadas ahu.
Los ahu constaban de un muro trasero reforzado, otro delantero de retención y una rampa. La estatua, con su pukao o tocado, apoyaba sobre una losa y un relleno de escombros. En el interior del ahu podía haber una cámara funeraria.
La construcción de un moai era sencilla. Primero delineado en la roca, era después tallado, dejando una quilla en su espalda que lo mantenía unido a la roca. Acabado el trabajo, se rompía la quilla y se dejaba deslizar ladera abajo hasta un foso, en el que se labraba su espalda.
Pero el gran misterio es cómo pudieron ser transportadas estas inmensas moles desde el lugar en el que fueron talladas, la cantera de Rano Raraku, hasta sus emplazamientos en el litoral, sin la ayuda de animales de carga. El investigador Thor Heyerdahl propuso que el moai era transportado sobre un trineo, que se deslizaría gracias a lubricantes vegetales. Mulloy sugirió la ayuda de dos grandes postes unidos en V y un trineo curvo, moviendo la estatua gracias al balanceo.
Pavel dice que pudieron moverse en vertical, inclinado hacia un costado y luego balanceado hacia adelante. Un trineo de troncos sobre rollos de madera es la hipótesis sugerida por Love. Finalmente, Van Tilburg sugirió que las estatuas debieron recostarse sobre un trineo, que avanzaría a su vez sobre rollos de madera. Probablemente este misterio, como el del fin de la cultura pascuense, nunca nos será desvelado.
