Motorcyclist leads LAPD on a chase across the South Bay
A motorcyclist who led officers on an hour long chase from the Westside to the South Bay was in custody today after surrendering in South Los Angeles. Officers began chasing the man at National Boulevard and the Santa Monica (10) Freeway in the Palms District at 10:15 p.m. yesterday because he had a red rag obscuring his license plate, said Sgt. Andrew Chase of the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Station. ``They saw that and figured something was wrong,'' Chase said. During the chase the man ran red lights and occasionally drove the wrong way on surface streets and the San Diego (405) Freeway but mostly maintained a speed of around 55 mph because, he later said, ``he hadn't been riding in a while and didn't want to get hurt,'' Chase reported. The pursuit ended about 11:15 p.m. yesterday when the man pulled over at Figueroa and Manchester avenues and surrendered without further incident, Chase said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, will be booked on suspicion of felony evading, Chase said. Police this morning were investigating the reason the man fled from officers. ``He said he just wanted to go home,'' Chase said.

Suspended 160 metres high, a German tightrope artist has made a record-breaking motorcycle crossing over the river Rhine to astonished gasps of thousands of onlookers. Johann Traber completed 14 revolutions around the 581-metre-long highwire attached to a trapeze driven by his 19-year-old son, thereby beating his previous world mark of twelve.
Running on a grooved front wheel, the pair performed the daredevil feat on the 16mm-thick rope at high speed. With no safety net, only the flimsiest of attachments stood between the motorcycle and certain doom.

Motorcyclist Escorting Funeral Hit By SUV
A motorcyclist who was escorting a funeral procession was hit by an SUV Wednesday afternoon.
The collision happened on Woods Chapel Road near Kingsridge Drive in Blue Springs.
Police said a 20-year-old driver of an SUV was seen passing cars in the funeral procession and then hit the funeral escort, who was trying to control traffic.
"Apparently the driver that was involved was leapfrogging -- witnesses say leapfrogging other cars in the procession," Detective Jeremy Dickstein said.
Steven Keith, 51, has life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. His employer said Keith is in the intensive care unit in critical condition.
Witnesses told KMBC's Chris Nagus that the SUV driver appeared to be upset.
"He was pretty well shaken up. It bothered him, you could tell," witness Ted Giefer said.
"He actually used my phone to call his wife -- he was rather (shaken)," witness Evelyn Loughran said.
Police said they believe the SUV driver had been drinking alcohol. He was taken into custody.

A Dangerous Business
Keith works for Professional Escorts, a company that is hired by funeral homes to try to keep processions safe.
The manager told KMBC that the business is becoming increasingly dangerous, especially in urban areas where drivers are more impatient.
"If you go outside of Kansas City into small towns, they will go into the ditch to get out of your way. If you're in Kansas City, it's more likely they will run over you to get you out of the way," said Roy Timberman with Professional Escorts.

Motorcyclist in Tel Aviv
A news story from Kveldsnytt (May 7, 2007 @ 23:00 on NRK1 in Norway) regarding a motorcyclist who was run over in Tel Aviv, Israel. The incident was captured by traffic cameras, which clearly shows many cars (over 40) just passing by the dying motorcyclist, minding their own business. It took a while before some pedestrians finally went over to him to see how he was. The 63 year old guy ended up dead in this intersection.
Translation of non-English segments:
[Anchorman]: A tape from a surveillance camera makes big headlines in Israel. A dead motorcyclist remains laying in the middle of the road for quite a while, but no cars stop. Now, the debate is on in Israel whether people have stopped caring.
[Reporter voice-over]: Pay close attention on the motorcyclist coming in from the left. [pause] He ended his days here, in a four lane intersection in Tel Aviv.
[Police officer, subtitled]: The motorcyclist rolled under the wheels of the truck. Another tow truck left the scene. We are investigating whether this truck was involved in the accident.
[Reporter voice-over]: Maybe the police should also talk to the drivers of the next fourty cars passing the motorcyclist. Car after car slows down and drive straight past the 63 year old man laying motionless on the road, but nobody stop. [pause] The debate continues in Israel, who likes to consider themself a caring nation, whether the country has become a society where people only care theirselves, without care for others.
[Other motorcyclist, subtitled (clarified)]: I think people are running over places, going to work, and they are becoming very individualist, and maybe they won't stop but it will take them more time to stop (sic), like they do in Paris or New York or anywhere.
[Reporter voice-over]: Finally, some people go closer to the scene and call for an ambulance, but already then, it's too late. The motorcyclist is already dead.
