Everyone has their own ideas about who actually works in the sex industry. But the truth might be different than what you think.
KMBC's Jere Gish talked with a local woman who owns her own phone-sex company. She told Gish that the person on the other end of that dirty phone call could be your next-door neighbor.
"It affords me freedom that I have never known in any business before," said Kayleigh, who asked that KMBC not reveal her real name.
Kayleigh is a phone-sex actress. She said her customers don't know what she looks like, but they know her voice.
"I enjoy talking to new people ... some of them," Kayleigh said.
Kayleigh said about eight years ago, she worked in insurance. But her company hit hard times and she needed money. Phone sex became an option. She runs her business from a Web site.
"I joked. I said, 'I could do that. I was a performing arts major in college. I can play anything,'" Kayleigh said.
But she admitted that she resisted the job at first.
"I had visions in my head of what you picture a phone-sex person to be and I'm not that person," Kayleigh said.
She said her first call wasn't easy.
"I was so embarrassed that I curled up in a chair and put a blanket over my head so my dog would not look at me," Kayleigh told Gish.
Now Kayleigh has 12 employees. They're women from across the country who work out of their homes, and they come from all walks of life, Gish reported.
