All film clips featured in this one-shot video are scored to various pieces of music selected by me. (Please contact me for credits.) "Scoring" for silents demands uniquely sympathetic musical treatment of film material, as thematically eloquent, emotionally resonant, and inventive as possible. I think I have succeeded in matching moods here, both cinematic and melodic. The six restored Harold Lloyd films in this video enjoy, on DVD, complete and original scores by Robert Israel (for five films) and Carl Davis (for "The Kid Brother"). To these gentlemen—and especially Mr. Israel—I say: such is my respect for your genius—your scores delight, move, and awe me—that I refused to either break up or into the flow of your magnificent musical narratives when I edited the film clips themselves—and, by the way, how to condense so much Harold-Lloyd-film brilliance into a ten-minute time frame was no mean challenge. First-time viewers of the Harold Lloyd DVDs are in for one hell of a treat when they hear the musical magic only YOU could create, good sirs.
A special hello and salute to Suzanne Lloyd of The Harold Lloyd Trust; Jeffrey Vance, film archivist and co-author—with Suzanne—of a book of riches entitled HAROLD LLOYD: MASTER COMEDIAN (2002/Harry N. Abrams); Leonard Maltin, Richard Schickel, Kevin Brownlow, and Annette D'Agostino Lloyd, film critics and historians...each of whom has shared his/her love of, knowledge about, and unique perspective on Harold Lloyd's work with the world—"in my own little corner," I was listening.
