Life Cycle of a Hurricane
The Imaging Research Center in collaboration with David Stroud of GEST and the OIT New Media Studio, conducted an Internet2 Netcast featuring Dr. Jeffrey Halverson of JCET on the "Lifecycle of a Hurricane." This interactive presentation linked the IRC and the University of Pennsylvania over Internet2. An audience of science teachers (grades 6-8) interacted with Dr. Halverson as he delivered a dynamic presentation on the development and evolution of hurricanes. This was followed by John Leck of NASA who discussed how teachers can use NASA science data such as this in the classroom. The Netcast was part of a grant that the Franklin Institute has with the NSF on using Internet2 and research data for professional development of K-12 STEM education. The presentation is a great example of STEM outreach and portends some additional exciting opportunities for both teacher professional development and student engagement in STEM.

STOP!!! Huntingdon Life Sciences Part 2
Huntingdon Life Sciences is one of the world's largest Contract Research Organizations. Founded in 1952 in the UK, the company is now an international business with resources on three continents. Originally the company concentrated upon nutrition, veterinary and biochemical research. An expansion of services in the late '50s led to the assessment of pharmaceuticals, food additives and a variety of crop protection and consumer chemicals'. This is the statement written on their official website. But what they WONT tell you is how all this biochemical research is conducted, who it's conducted on and how it's conducted on companion animals; cats and dogs; the ones who we love, make us happy and the ones we share our lives with. Animal testing is a controversial topic but while it's going on, it's our most urgent need and morally right duty as caring human beings to STOP companion animals being tested on; it's wrong and shouldn't be tolerated by any thinking compassionate person. The ALF (Animal Liberation Front) smashed open the doors and saved that beautiful black and white Border Collie dog, who was wagging its tail in delight. Look in its eyes, look again, does it look happy to be out of there? does it look relieved that angels in black balaclavas came to save him from being experimented on with needles and syringes? Do you hate the ALF for standing up for what's right? Because I can tell you one thing, looking in that beautiful dogs eyes he certainly does not. The tremendous River Phoenix was right, he was so right when he said "we need an extreme animal movement because what is happening to animals is so extreme" Please visit my blog on my profile and read the archives entitled animal thoughts and animals in research for more. Please visit their website and the website of the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) to learn about and help in the campaign to shut this company down for good. www.shac.net www.animalliberationfront.com This video was uploaded with permission from www.shac.net Thank You

RNC Delegate Video DVD #1 - 2 of 14
On the Road to the Repulican National Convention in Minneapolis - Saint Paul produced by DVDs4Delegates Project. Donate to this project at www.dvds4delegates.com This video was made as part of a grassroots effort involving and supported by over 500 individual republicans who are concerned for the future of America. The majority of all original scriptwriting and footage has been originated and collected entirely by unpaid volunteers, and all other footage has been collected under Fair Use Provisions as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107. Due to lack of cooperation by most state GOP organizations and the RNC, we had to involve a team of over 100 volunteers working for more than two months to find the names and addresses of the 4,300 delegates and alternates, for whom this has been made. Cooking with Alvin
Mallam Phillips created this video during the summer of 2008, at Rice University with the help of CBEN. He was researching the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in the Barron research group. Alvin, a graduate student in the research group, speaks about the synthesis of the nanoparticles, the use of silver nanoparticles, as well mentioning some of his other work that relates to the growth of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes. Additionally he bestows some parting thoughts for anyone considering graduate research.

Iran Test Launches Kavoshgar-1 Space Rocket
Iran launched a rocket on Monday designed to send its first homemade research satellite into orbit in the next year, state television said. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad read out the launch countdown before the rocket blasted off to chants of "God is greatest" by an audience of officials in a control room, state TV reported. TV footage showed the rocket soaring into the sky from a desert launch pad, leaving a vapor trail. A parachute appeared to drop from the rocket shortly after the launch. State television gave few details about the rocket. State media said the research satellite, called Omid (Hope), would be launched by March 2009.

Optimization for Machine Learning
Google Tech Talks March, 25 2008 ABSTRACT S.V.N. Vishwanathan - Research Scientist Regularized risk minimization is at the heart of many machine learning algorithms. The underlying objective function to be minimized is convex, and often non-smooth. Classical optimization algorithms cannot handle this efficiently. In this talk we present two algorithms for dealing with convex non-smooth objective functions. First, we extend the well known BFGS quasi-Newton algorithm to handle non-smooth functions. Second, we show how bundle methods can be applied in a machine learning context. We present both theoretical and experimental justification of our algorithms. Speaker: S.V.N. Vishwanathan - Research Scientist - Zurich S.V.N Vishwanathan is a principal researcher in the Statistical Machine Learning program, National ICT Australia with an adjunct appointment at the College of Engineering and Computer Science(CECS), Australian National University. I got my Ph.D in 2002 from the Department of Computer Science and Automation (CSA) at the Indian Institute of Science.
