Fazal Rabi [rabab] & Mir Tawas [sitar] - rasha janana wraz
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: If there was anyone to match Shad Muhammad [sitar player from Bakhsali, Mardan] in playing sitar, then I would say it was Mir Tawas. But unfortunately both of them are no more with us. Shad Muhammad died because of mental illness whereas Mir Tawas was accidently shot by a stray bullet. I had the opportunity to meet both of them the same day. The legendary Fazal Rabi of Toru had introduced me to them in 1987, the day this recording was done in Mardan. That was a wonderful day in my life, but little did I realize then that this would be my last meeting with them.
By profession, Mir Tawas was a barber and had a shop in the old bus stand, Mardan. He was not even 25 years old when he died. He was about 5 feet, and had very dark bushy beard. He recorded a few songs on Sitar for PTV Peshawar. Not many knew him then but anyone who listened to his performance was confident that Mir Tawas was headed for excellance and a well deserved place in Pashto art history. I hope PTV and Radio Station Peshawar still has his recordings.
Shah Muhammad, on the other hand, was a household name. He did many recording for Radio Station, Peshawar, and PTV. He died while he was in his sixties.
