Explosions in the Sky - Memorial live (8/30/01)
Explosions in the Sky performs an amazing live rendition of "Memorial" from the band's 2003 CD release - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place.
This footage was taped at Emo's in Austin, TX on 8/30/01, a full two years before the song was commercially released. Great show from such a dynamic, instrumental band - no doubt Explosions in the Sky is proudly considered as one of Austin's finest. Hope you dig it.

PONG - 'Pong' live @ Emo's - Austin, TX (9/8/00)
Austin's PONG performs its self-titled song "Pong," live at Emo's in Austin, TX on Sept. 8, 2000. This song was soon released on the 2001 *Killer Lifestyle* CD. Some added history - before Pong came about, some of the band members were in the legendary, psychedelic, rock group, Ed Hall, which often did shows under black lights, (sometime) nude, while smearing Day-Glo paints over each other throughout the performance. Those were the days!
If you're ever in Austin and are looking to catch a great live act, keep an eye out for Pong. The band is full of good times and humorous lyrics, and the music is bound to get your booty gyrating. It's all about FUN with these guys.
Note: Performing with Pong on this night were also Austin's own Brown Whornet and Three Day Stubble from San Fran. Quite a whacky show (this is an understatement). For me, a "dose of liquid D" sure made it extra fun, and a bit more challenging doing the video taping. hehe

ST-37 performs Roky Erickson's "Cold Night for Alligators"
Austin's own ST-37 performs a cover of Roky Erickson & the 13th Floor Elevator's "Cold Night for Alligators" at Room 710 in Austin, TX on Sept. 21st, 2000.
"Forget about San Francisco: The American capitol of psychedelic rock was Austin, Texas, and no band soared higher than Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators. In addition to acid-tinged garage rockers... which viscerally evoked the sounds of their (song) titles while offering lyrics that provided a philosophical structure for the psychedelic experience. The lyrics were written by (Roky Erickson and) Tommy Hall, who also played amplified jug. Hard as it may be to believe now, that jug created a weird sound that predicted that burbling synthesizers of modern-day techno." --Jim Derogatis (editor & reviewer for Amazon.com)

A FIVE AND DIME SHIP - "burnin chrome" live (12/10/02)
A Five and Dime Ship performs "burnin chrome" live at the Vibe - Austin, TX on 12/10/02. "Burnin Chrome" is on the band's superb 2004 double-CD release, The Way It All Would End. A great release any Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, or Radiohead fan should definitely seek out. Again, Austin's A Five and Dime Ship are worth giving a listen to - its mind-melting song writing is of topnotch worthiness. These guys have instrumental dynamics down, in their own unique style. Nothing compares.
Hope you enjoy - TryLSDnow (~);}
Note: This is the first time the band performed live, and it was amazingly tight. And for further info, two of the band members, James and Zippy, came from Austin's legendary trrip rock outfit, 7% Solution, another psychedelic band in its own merits.

VietNam - Live at Emo's (2/28/02) part 1 of 2
VietNam was definitely a very young band during this time. Two years into the band's existence, it was a six piece unit, and Austin, TX was home.
This footage, taped at Emo's in February 2002, captures some of VietNam's raw, basic musical traits/characteristics.
Now, in 2007, it's quite a reflection looking back, seeing and hearing the band flourish artistically in other directions, yet retaining its core ideals. The two core band members, Michael and Josh, have dropped the keys and sax, and minimized down to basic rock necessities. They've also left Austin and moved on to Brooklyn (we'll keep the porch lights on, just in case you folks return).
Anyway, hopefully you VietNam fans enjoy this old footage of the original lineup.
If anyone knows the name of this song, then please let me know, so I can change the video title. Thanx.
Godspeed, VietNam! Keep up the great work, and congrats with the Rolling Stone interview (Jan '07) - it was beautiful.
Note: VietNam opened this show for And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead and Explosions in the Sky. Overall, a brilliant night at Emo's!!!

PONG - "Incapacitated" live @ Emo's - Austin TX (9/8/00)
Austin's PONG performs its hilarious song "Incapacitated," live at Emo's in Austin, TX on Sept. "Those were the days," Edith sings to Archie.
For me, a "dose of liquid D" sure made it extra fun, and a bit more challenging doing the video taping. hehe. I plan to add some Three Day Stubble and Brown Whornet footage in the very near future...
Until next time, I hope you can dig.

VietNam - Live at Emo's (2/28/02) part 2 of 2
VietNam was definitely a very young band during this time. Two years into the band's existence, it was a six piece unit, and Austin, TX was home.
This footage, taped at Emo's in February 2002 (5 years ago), captures some of VietNam's raw, basic musical traits/characteristics.
Now, in 2007, it's quite a reflection looking back, seeing and hearing the band flourish artistically in another direction. The two core band members, Michael and Josh, have dropped the keys and sax, and minimized down to basic rock necessities. Note: The audience was really chatty during the more quiet moments. I don't know why folks even go to live shows, if they're not going to be quiet and watch/hear - Sorta need to act as if they're in a movie theatre. MY EDUCATION - "Snake in the Grass" live in Austin (5/17/03)
Austin's instrumental ensemble, My Education performs "Snake in the Grass" live at the Flamingo Cantina - Austin, TX on 5/17/03. "Snake in the Grass" is on the band's insightfully cerebral 2005 CD release, Italian. (Released on Thirty Ghosts Records)
Although sometime being compared to the likes of Explosions in the Sky or Mogwai, My Education further explores its artful music by adding keyboards, a viola, and a violin into the regular guitar, bass, and drums formula, thus achieving musical visions similar to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, yet MyEd still stands easily on its own.
"David Fricke of Rolling Stone called My Education's sound "advanced ecstasy" and announced the band as his "surprise find" at SXSW 2005, but plenty of fans from central Texas and all around the globe already knew that My Education are better than drugs: the pulse-pounding emotion of their visceral live shows and the lyrical beauty and dark grandeur of their recorded output had heralded this from the get-go."
Personally, I just can't seem to articulate the senses and emotions My Education conjures in my mind. The range of moods, the dynamics, the warmth, the hypnotic droning... how can words describe? I wish this band the best. I've been touched (as have many other Austinites), and hope others elsewhere in this universe will be.
Sincerely, TryLSDnow

MEAT PUPPETS - "Lake of Fire" live in Austin (1/17/99)
Now relocated to Austin, TX - the Meat Puppets performs "Lake of Fire" at Emo's on Jan. 17, 1999. Being a Sims Foundation charity show, the Meat Puppets headlined the bill with openers Godzilla Motor Co. and Skrew. This version of "Lake of Fire" is short and highly explosive, showing an exciting, fresh renewal for the Meat Puppets. BTW, the band (exept sahm) wore cute matching pink PJs during the performance! This was an extraodinary night at Emo's - hope you can enjoy this vigorously powerful onslaught. Because of its effective catchiness, no wonder Kurk Cobain covered this song while in Nirvana!
-Sincerely, TryLSDnow (~);}
------------------------------------------------
"Lake of Fire" lyric by Curt Kurkwood
(Chorus)
"Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly.
They go to a lake of fire and fry,
Won't see 'em again 'til the 4th of July"
"I knew a lady who came from Duluth,
Got bit by a dog with a rabid tooth.
She went to her grave just a little too soon,
flew and laid down on the yellow moon."
(Repeat Chorus)
"People cry and people moan,
Look for a dry place to call their home.
Try to find some place to rest their bones,
While the angels and the devils
Try to make 'em their own"
(Repeat Chorus)
(guitar lead)

MY EDUCATION - "Deep Cut" live in Austin, TX (5/17/03)
My Education performs "Deep Cut" live at the Flamingo Cantina - Austin, TX on 5/17/03. "Deep Cut" is on the band's brilliantly beautiful 2001 CD release, 5 Popes. This instrumental album glides smoothly in and out of deeply emotional moods, creating majestic soundscapes and warm environments - art for the ear. Any fan of Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, or Explosions in the Sky should seek out a My Education CD release. Also highly recommended is the 2005 CD, Italian. MyEd's musical sound experience is priceless, and this footage captures this live show's audio accurately.
Note: I actually hired the band to play a private show for my loft community. I'd gotten a soundman and provided a PA system, but the band didn't desire to use it. My Education had beautiful control of its sound, and not one band member had a selfish ego, trying to play louder and be a so-called "sound hog." They all knew when each member should be in the "spotlight," thus allowing the songs to shine, as truly aware artists should be of their music. A very dedicated and conscious group of guys. Not one My Education show has ever disappointed me - I've always been stunned.
Hope you enjoy - TryLSDnow (~);}
