Reitz - What's really behind the "urination" scene?
This regrettable incident has brought to light some issues that may help to improve our understanding of racial tensions in South Africa.
Government enforced racial integration is just as wrong as government enforced racial segregation.
Freedom of association is a basic human right that is violated by both of these policies.
Voluntary association with one's own race is a natural phenomenon that occurs in every country of the world. To deny that is to go against nature and is bound to cause friction and conflict.
While promotion of multi-culturalism is a beautiful concept, it turns ugly when enforced upon people, particularly if they form a minority group who feel that their culture is under threat.
Those who favour multi-culturalism should not put themselves on a moral throne and look down upon those who feel more secure when they are allowed to follow their natural group instincts. Neither should these people be demonised as racist when they feel that their culture is under threat.
Even after it has been made clear that no actual urination took place in this incident, black people are still extremely upset. Why is this?
1. The act of urination on your enemies is seen in the black culture as exerting one's dominance over the other, and implies extreme humiliation of the victim. Thus, whether actual urination took place or not is irrelevant -- the mere act conveys the same message. Whether these guys thought it was only a joke or not, makes no difference to their interpretation.
One black protester showed a poster saying "proudly black", confirming their interpretation of the video as "a message of humiliation".
2. The motivation behind this video seems to have been to protest in a joking fashion against enforced racial integration. This is also extremely offensive to black people, because they find it difficult to understand that as a minority group in South Africa, the Afrikaners feel threatened when they are not allowed to preserve some institutions, e.g. certain hostels, for their own culture. The black people wish to dominate all aspects of the South African society, because as the majority group they believe this is their right. Apartheid will certainly be blamed for this for generations to come, but eventually it all comes down to simple power politics: "who's in charge of this piece of land?"
The 2 million or so Afrikaners who are truly committed to South Africa, and who will never leave this country alive, will have to decide if they can bear to live under a black government with no control over their destiny, or if they are willing to establish territorial autonomy based on majority occupation, and in so doing to detach themselves from institutions that are increasingly falling under black dominance (ESKOM-style).
