the merchant of venice - shylock monologue
the merchant of venice by william shakespeare
act iii - scene i
SHYLOCK
To bait fish withal: if it will feed nothing else,
it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and
hindered me half a million; laughed at my losses,
mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my
bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine
enemies; and what's his reason? I am a Jew. Hath
not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs,
dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with
the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject
to the same diseases, healed by the same means,
warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as
a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed?
if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison
us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not
revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will
resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian,
what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian
wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by
Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you
teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I
will better the instruction.

Venice Under Siege - Italy
March 1996
Fires, floods, pollution and depopulation all threaten Venice - Italy today. The picturesque sights of sun glinting on the waves, elegant villas and ornate bridges are rarely associated with oil spills, petrol refineries and other hazards that pollute the lagoon. Neither would tourists expect to see noisy diggers dredging up mud from the canal floor in an attempt to protect buildings from flood damage. More worrying is the possibility that Venice will turn into nothing more than a touristic showpiece. Local families are leaving Venice for an easier life on the mainland. Survivors like the Farinati family live in a city where there are no cars, no supermarkets and very few schools. Mr Farinati, who runs a glass restoration business, has to heave sheets of glass off a boat, along a wood plank and then through a window before he can start work. Tourists in Venice far outnumber the residents. Venetians are an endangered species and their survival depends upon finding a solution to the many problems.
