En el siglo XVII Delft era una de las ciudades más prósperas de los PaÃses Bajos gracias a su floreciente comercio y su industria, especialmente la porcelana. En 1650 contaba con unos 25.000 habitantes pero cuatro años más tarde se produce el estallido del polvorÃn municipal, momento que supone el inicio de la recesión económica al resultar destruida la mayor parte de la ciudad.
En las décadas centrales del siglo XVII se desarrolla en Delft una activa escuela de pintura que lleva su nombre, escuela en la que destaca la personalidad de Johannes Vermeer.
Vermeer nace en Delft en el año 1632, siendo bautizado el 31 de octubre. Sus padres regentaban una hosterÃa que era frecuentada por algunos artistas, lo que pudo incitar al joven a dedicarse a la pintura.
Desconocemos quién fue el maestro de Vermeer, apuntándose a Carel Fabritius, alumno de Rembrandt llegado a Delft en 1650 y fallecido en esta ciudad vÃctima de la explosión del polvorÃn. En 1653 Vermeer ingresa en la CofradÃa de San Lucas y contrae matrimonio con Catharina Bolnes, joven de religión católica. El matrimonio tendrá quince hijos, de los que ocho vivirán en el hogar familiar a la muerte del pintor.
El análisis de los rasgos estilÃsticos y referencias documentales han permitido establecer cuatro etapas en su producción. En primer lugar nos encontramos con los trabajos de juventud, correspondientes a años posteriores a su ingreso en la CofradÃa de San Lucas, por lo que no pueden ser consideradas trabajos de aprendizaje....

Johannes Vermeer van Delft, b. October 1632, d. December 1675, a Dutch genre painter who lived and worked in Delft, created some of the most exquisite paintings in Western art.
His works are rare. Of the 35 or 36 paintings generally attributed to him, most portray figures in interiors. All his works are admired for the sensitivity with which he rendered effects of light and color and for the poetic quality of his images.
Little is known for certain about Vermeer's life and career. He was born in 1632, the son of a silk worker with a taste for buying and selling art. Vermeer himself was also active in the art trade. He lived and worked in Delft all his life. Not much is known about Vermeer's apprenticeship as an artist either. His teacher may have been Leonaert Bramer, a Delft artist who was a witness at Vermeer's marriage in 1653, or the painter Carel Fabritius of Delft. In 1653 he enrolled at the local artists guild.
