Vibrating Pole
Short (regrettably not very steady) mobile phone video of an old disused aerial pole (minus the aerial) attached to a neighbour's house which was observed to be vibrating in an unusual way on two occasions during Tuesday 4th November. The first observation was around 10am. This video tries to capture the second observation at around 2pm.
I had never seen this occurring before (I've lived here five years), and it hasn't done it in the five days between filming and uploading this video. It was overcast and there was almost no wind. The metal pole is about 12 feet tall and an inch in diameter, attached to the house by two sturdy brackets. The old aerial cable still runs down it.
The vibrating continued for at least five minutes each time, gradually dissipating until movement could no longer be observed with the naked eye. No other aerial poles in the immediate locale (there are several) were moving.
That night, a UFO over south Bristol, about 18 miles away, was filmed by two women using a mobile phone (reported in The Sun newspaper on Thursday 6th November - see http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iQn_SHhzNmk ). Apparently it shot red beams down to the ground.
I wondered at the time of observation if the pole might be vibrating in resonance with an electro-magnetic field of some kind (as, with wind discounted as a cause, and there being no other discernable disruption causing vibrations through the ground, there seemed no other 'rational' explanation).
I was intrigued to then read about the UFO sighting. Could there be a connection? Perhaps the UFO was passing overhead earlier in the day, hidden by the low clouds? Or was it a HAARP test?
UPDATE: 13 Nov 2008 - the mystery is solved: it's caused by vortex shedding. See my blog post http://www.bobkingsley.co.uk/blog/?p=210
