David Virgoe News Story: Hero on the 400

Heroes often exist within our very midst,
watching out for our wellbeing without
ever knowing it. David Virgoe is such a hero.
On Monday, June 18, 2007, tragic circumstances
resulting from a collision with an alleged speeding
car on Highway 400 south of Highway 89 in Ontario,
Canada claimed David's life - a professional truck
driver for 26 years.
Police and witnesses at the scene have acknowledged
David's heroic actions in the final moments of his life.
David had initiated difficult and deliberate avoidance
maneuvers that, without doubt, prevented other
deaths and injuries from occurring that day.
To his family and friends, David's virtues were well
known - a big rig driver for more than a quarter
century, David lived his life doing what he loved
doing best: covering literally millions of miles of
highway professional, conscientiously and without
a single accident.
With a commitment to tomorrow, let us honour the
memory of David Virgoe by conducting ourselves
on the world's roadways as he had done - safely,
professionally, and with utmost consideration for the
wellbeing of those who share life's journey with us*.

CONCEPT AND CONSTRUCTION
The SuperStar Virgo was ordered by Star Cruises on November 22, 1995 from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany as the second ship of the Leo class, and the second newbuilding for Star Cruises. Like her sister ship SuperStar Leo, she was designed specifically for the Asian cruise market. The keel of the SuperStar Virgo was laid on November 18, 1996, and she was floated out of drydock on December 23, 1998 and delivered to Star Cruises on August 2, 1999.
SERVICE HISTORY
Following the lengthy transit from Papenburg to Singapore, the SuperStar Virgo entered cruise services from Singapore on October 10, 1999. On April 24, 2003 the SuperStar Virgo was relocated from Singapore to operate cruises out of Perth, Western Australia due to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Southeast Asia. Initially the redeployment was planned to last only a one-month evaluation period, but due to the success of the cruises out of Australia the SuperStar Virgo was based in Perth until July 2003.
In 2004 the SuperStar Virgo became the sole "mega-ship", and the only purpose-built ship, in Star Cruises' fleet, when her sister SuperStar Leo was transferred to the fleet of Star Cruises' subsidiary Norwegian Cruise Line (newbuildings planned or ordered by Star Cruises after the SuperStar Virgo had either been cancelled or moved to the NCL fleet prior to delivery). On April 2, 2008 the SuperStar Virgo relocated from Singapore to Hong Kong as her port of departure until 26 October 2008 - the redeployment coinciding with the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Simulation of our Universe showing in large scale
The Virgo consortium, an international group of astrophysicists from the UK, Germany, Japan, Canada and the USA has today (June 2nd) released first results from the largest and most realistic simulation ever of the growth of cosmic structure and the formation of galaxies and quasars. In a paper published in Nature, the Virgo Consortium shows how comparing such simulated data to large observational surveys can reveal the physical processes underlying the build-up of real galaxies and black holes.
PLEASE READ: A parsec (symbol pc) is a unit of length used in astronomy. The length of the parsec is based on the method of trigonometric parallax, one of the oldest methods for measuring the distances to stars.
The name parsec stands for "parallax of one second of arc", and one parsec is defined to be the distance from the Earth to a star that has a parallax of 1 arcsecond. The actual length of a parsec is approximately 3.262 light-years.

the nearest large galaxy cluster, the Virgo Cluster, is about 18 Mpc away from the Earth.
the galaxy RXJ1242-11, observed to have a supermassive black hole core similar to the Milky Way's, is about 200 Mpc away from the Earth.
the particle horizon (the observable part of the universe) has a radius of about 14 Gpc.
One gigaparsec (Gpc) is one billion parsecs — one of the largest distance measures commonly used. One gigaparsec is about 3.262 billion light-years.
