The ensemble of large recorders called duduks, from Popovica, a Serbian village on the slopes of the Deli Jovan (1150m), as well as the dance group which it accompanies, is famous throughout the region since 1970, when it won the Selo moje (" my village") prize on Belgrade television. The straight flute (with 6 holes in front and no thumb hole behind), generally made of boxwood (dren) are between 40 and 65 cm long. The flute players are Dragisa Trifunovic, Zivko Kumric and Dragisa Radojevic. The bubanj drum is played by Ljubivoje Simic. The dance group is directed by Zivorad Bogie, a friend of long standing. Their repertoire is very extended, including melodies for funerals and weddings, as well as at least 50 very different rounds. The people of Popovica probably came originally from a Valaque Tsarani village near Bulgaria. The costumes, the strong accents and the rhythm are testimony to this.
