Palo drumming and dancing - Vodou - Dominican Republic
http://www.earthcds.com/caribbean/dominican/palodvd.shtml 'The Culture of Palo', aspires to be a humble archival collection of all the marvelous musical-religious expressions encountered in the course of filming 'MISTERIOS' that for editorial, timing and formatting reasons was not possible to include in it. This footage is presented as a valuable and long-awaited addition to the scarce material available on the subject of religious music and traditions in the Dominican Republic. Anthropologists, ethno-musicologists and the general public will find this work entertaining and educational. It will also offer them a new and valid teaching tool, but most of all, help preserve at least a small part of this rapidly disappearing and mutating oral tradition. Vodou - dealing with bad spirits
http://www.earthcds.com/caribbean/dominican/misterios.shtml MISTERIOS is a journey in the complex and mysterious world of VUDU worshipping and spiritual possessions. Guided by the very voice of the 'Servidores de Misterio', we open a door into their faith, their ancient rituals and their supernatural experiences. The 'Servidores de Misterios', 'Los Caballos' (the horses) are the priests, the intermediaries between the spirits of the Loas and ordinary people. The spirits descend into their bodies sometimes after being invoked, especially during the intense drumming of a Fiesta de Palos. They are the 'Horses' who temporarily carry the spirit in their own body while in a state of trance. They are the people I followed and asked questions to, who permitted me to film the ceremonies and places of worship portrayed in this video. -Written by Giovanni Savino Now available on DVD here: http://www.earthcds.com/caribbean/dominican/misterios.shtml

Haitian vodou song: Marasa yo by RAM
Here's the kanaval song of 1995 by RAM called Marasa yo. The Marasa are twin sacred children loas (although they are depicted as three for their union also represents and gives way to a third force {the 1+1=3 }), angelic looking, very capricious, but usually compliant when satisfied with food and toys (BUT NO VEGETABLES or leafy things that apparently can destroy their power), within the vodou religion. Although they are represented as children, they are one of the oldest and most important loas seen as there since the beginning (they're ageless, sexless, raceless among other things) and are invoked along with Papa Legba at the beginning of ceremonies. They represent the sacredness, importance, beauty and innocence of children, the embodiment and fusion of higher cosmic forces, abundance of life, blessings, harmony, balance, and etc...Known to behave like spoiled kids who must be treated exactly alike (Same food, same portion, same plates, same offerings, and etc... in order to not evoke any sibling jealousy), they aren't the easiest to deal with, but they're known to have the ability to heal, have magical and psychic powers such as predicting, give good luck, and have the ability to double or triple any good blessings. Great care is taken to not dissatisfy them for they are terrible when punishing, and will cause chaos and trouble. like kids scorned. Other loas mentioned are Papa Legba, Simityè, Bosou, Papa Loko... Background: RAM (stands for the initial of its founder) is one of the most prominent vodou-themed bands in Rasin (roots) music. Created in 1990 by Richard A. Morse (Mother is Emerante de Pradines, Haitian folklore dancer and singer) who moved to Port-au-Prince, seeking to better explore Haitian roots and Caribbean music, RAM is known for its sometimes interesting fusion of traditional music and rock n' roll. As beloved as they are and known for being the people's voice, the group who hasn't been popular with the government has survived kidnapping threats, assissination attempts due to their political lyrics and speaking out against the government, making their mark known especially under the oppressive regime of Raoul Cedras (1991-1994). Richard, and his wife Lunise are the group's lead singers.
