BBC Space Race episode 3 (5) Vostok 1
"Space Race" is a BBC docu-drama series between September/October 2005, chronicling the major events and characters in the American/Soviet space race. It focusses on Sergei Korolev, the Soviets' chief rocket designer, and Wernher von Braun, his American counterpart.
Here see Vostok 1 Flying, from the launch to landing.
First manned spaceflight, one orbit of the earth. Three press releases were prepared, one for success, two for failures. It was only known ten minutes after burnout, 25 minutes after launch, if a stable orbit had been achieved. The payload included life-support equipment and radio and television to relay information on the condition of the pilot. The flight was automated; Gagarin's controls were locked to prevent him from taking control of the ship. The combination to unlock the controls was available in a sealed envelope in case it became necessary to take control in an emergency. After retrofire, the service module remained attached to the Sharik reentry sphere by a wire bundle. The joined craft went through wild gyrations at the beginning of re-entry, before the wires burned through. The Sharik, as it was designed to do, then naturally reached aerodynamic equilibrium with the heat shield positioned correctly. Gagarin ejected after re-entry and descended under his own parachute, as was planned. However for many years the Soviet Union denied this, because the flight would not have been recognized for various FAI world records unless the pilot had accompanied his craft to a landing. Recovered April 12, 1961 8:05 GMT. Landed Southwest of Engels Smelovka, Saratov.

1961: Vostok 2 (USSR)
Vostok 2 was a Soviet space mission which carried cosmonaut Gherman Titov into orbit for a full day in order to study the effects of a more prolonged period of weightlessness on the human body.
Unlike Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1, Titov took manual control of the spacecraft for a short while.
The flight was an almost complete success, marred only by a bout of space sickness, a malfunctioning heater that allowed the inside temperature to drop to 6.1°C, and a troublesome re-entry when the re-entry module failed to separate cleanly from its service module.
The re-entry capsule was destroyed during development of the Voskhod spacecraft.

Vostok 1 flight using Orbiter
Simulated Vostok 1 flight using Orbiter Space Flight simulator.
Vostok 1 was the flight that carried the first human into space, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into earth orbit, on April 12, 1961.
I took control of the R7 manually, to reach earth orbit. Most values are true to the original. This is not exactly a how-to but yes, can be used as reference for your own Vostok 1 attempts.
