Lynyrd Skynyrd's Leon Wilkeson Sings "Ballad For A Soldier"
Here is the late Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Leon Wilkeson singing the song "Ballad For A Soldier" by Leon Russell. This was shot in 1987 on the Tribute Tour. Leon can be seen singing Russell's "Stranger In A Strange Land" in the Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour documentary (available on DVD with Freebird The Movie). Leon's background vocals were an important part of the band in the early days before Skynyrd hired the Honkettes. He would continue to sing vocals, most notably on "Call Me The Breeze".

Norwegian Fjord Joline in Wilkeson Days parade.
Wilkeson, WA, a small town on the NW side of Mount Rainier has annual Wilkeson Days parade. Monster cars, antiques, souped up lawn mowers etc. Our Norwegian Fjord Joline (yo-LEE-na of Pack's Peak Stables) handled all the noise and ruckus without batting an eye. The only thing that really got her attention was when the Mule next to her started to bray. Watch the look on my horse when the Mule cuts loose.
Cart was driven by our trainer, Bonnie Morris of Shadow Mountain Stables along with a helper. I followed with a golf cart to get pix and clean up any leftovers on the road.

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Tuesday's Gone (live 2007 - sweet!)

There is rock 'n' roll...then there is great rock 'n' roll...and then there is Lynyrd Skynyrd!!! God bless Lynyrd Skynyrd!
(pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd), commonly referred to as "Pronounced", is the debut album from Lynyrd Skynyrd, released in 1973. It features the hit songs "I Ain't the One", "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man", "Tuesday's Gone", and "Free Bird", the rock anthem that first brought the band national attention. The album was re-released in 2001 as an expanded version with bonus tracks, including demos of many of the songs on the album.
Though Lynyrd Skynyrd had only six members at the release of Pronounced, there are seven men visible in the band's photo on the sleeve. This is because the band's bassist, Leon Wilkeson, left the band before the album's completion - though he wrote many of the bass parts. Strawberry Alarm Clock guitarist Ed King was asked to fill in for Wilkeson, and remained with the band such that they could replicate the triple guitar lead during live performances.
From left, the men in the photo are: Leon Wilkeson, Billy Powell, Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington (seated), Bob Burns, Allen Collins, and Ed King.
The album cover photograph was shot on Main Street in Jonesboro, Ga. They are a only few feet away from where Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed loaded the Coors beer onto the tractor trailer rig in 1977's "Smokey and the Bandit."
"Tuesday's Gone" is the second track on Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album, "(pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)". One of the band's most popular songs, its relaxing pace and serenading guitars have made it a fan staple. The lyrics, featuring themes of a relationship ending because of extensive touring, are similar in mood to the band's signature tune "Free Bird". The distinct introduction to the song features a mellotron, played by Al Kooper. The song is memorably featured in the film Dazed and Confused, during the scene where a party winds down and the lucky and luckless people go home, its bitter sweet tone attempting to capture the mood. The movie Happy Gilmore also included the song, which plays during the opening and ending credits. Also, Tuesday's Gone is featured in the biography movie Prefontaine about Steve Prefontaine. The song is playing during the scene where Pre encounters an ex girlfriend for whom he still has feelings.

Allen Collins Band "Chapter One"
After recovering from severe injuries sustained in the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, and a successful stint with the Rossington Collins Band, guitarist Allen Collins created his own eponymous group. Joining him were fellow ex- Skynyrd bassist Leon Wilkeson together with former Rossington Collins Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd colleagues keyboard player Billy Powell and drummer Derek Hess. Rounding out the band were guitarists Barry Lee Harwood and Randall Hall with Jimmy Dougherty providing the vocals. Here, There & Back was released in the US exclusively and would be the Allen Collins Bands only release. In 1986 tragedy struck Allen Collins again. His girlfriend was killed in a car crash in which Collins himself was left paralyzed from the waist down. Four years later Allen Collins died of pneumonia. Singer Jimmy Dougherty, who co-wrote many of the songs on the album passed away January 20 2008.
Jimmy Dougherty (vocals), Allen Collins (guitar), Randall Hall (guitar), Barry Lee Harwood (guitar), Leon Wilkeson (bass), Billy Powell (keyboards), Derek Hess (drums)
There is a special exclusive limited edition CD available in the USA only at the allencollins.com website. Allen Collins was a co-founder of ROLL4ROCK music benefits & festivals for physically challenged awareness back in 1988.
