Beautiful Minds: Stephen Wiltshire
Stephen Wiltshire from London is a star among savants. Stephen is autistic. He did not speak his first words "pencil" and "paper" until he was 5. Yet, when he was 11 he drew a perfect aerial view of London after only one helicopter ride. For this film we're testing the "Living camera" in Rome. (ColourField production)

Stephen Wiltshire draws Tokyo from memory
(www.stephenwiltshire.co.uk) One of Stephen's extraordinary abilities is to memorize landscapes up to the highest detail. During this flight he had a thorough look at the view of the Japanese capital from the helicopter including thousands of buildings, towers, high-ways, cars, buses, even down to intricate details of trees and windows. Following the 30 minutes ride Stephen seemed to be very excited and ready for the challenge.

Wiltshire Police Helicopter
The Wiltshire police air support unit G-WPAS is a McDonnell Douglas MD-902 Explorer, which has no tail rotor, instead it has a rotatable vent which expels hot air from the engines. Shown here lifting off from the helipad at Salisbury District Hospital, the pilot then does a nice "handbrake turn" followed by flying backwards before departing. Show-off! Edit: I now know it's a standard take off, and he's not showing off, he's being nice and safe. I don't have time to keep up with everybody telling me this, so I've closed the comments off.

Extraordinary People - Stephen Wiltshire
In 1987, 11 year old Stephen Wiltshire featured in a BBC documentary, the misguidedly titled The Foolish Wise Ones, which focused on a small group of autistics with remarkable skills. To the amazement of his schoolteachers, at the age of six, this unhappy, withdrawn, tantrumprone little boy started drawing London buildings from memory, with extraordinary accuracy. The film showed Stephen losing himself in the absorbing task of depicting a controlled a million miles from the anxiety-ridden one he inhabited. Now aged 33 his talent has led to a highly lucrative career, exhibiting and selling his artwork in his own gallery near Trafalgar square. This engrossing film follows Stephen as he returns to school to meet the teachers who encouraged his talents, and embarks on a feat that push even him to his limits - a four meter aerial panorama of London, drawn from memory after a 15-minute helicopter ride. The resulting picture is absolutely astonishing.
