TAXI DRIVER film analysis by Xanatos
I thought i'd start something different apart from the slapstick/comedy machinima routine and start something serious that, if theres some good feedback, ill continue to make more in addition to this - film analyses. And to start, i'll begin with this video on Taxi Driver (1976), directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Paul Schrader, and starring Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, etc.
Before I go any further, I have to acknowledge chumfum and his great movie analyses which inspired me to start a few of my own. See him on youtube - "chumfum" and his analyses of 2001 A Space Odyssey, Cape Fear, and Psycho (to name a few). He's the pro with the original idea.
Next, lets move onto Taxi Driver, a film about a Vietnam War vet who becomes a cabbie, and is driven to madness by the urban decay he sees around him as he wishes it was all 'flushed right down the toilet'. Travis Bickle, the protagonist, is 'gods lonely man'.
I wanted to keep the video brief and to the point. There is plenty more you could say about this film, but I kept it basic. I also did not touch on the racism element that clings to Travis Bickle, the movie's main character, for obvious reasons. So hopefully you learn a bit more about the symbolism of the film (like the $20 bill the pimp gives Travis represents the corruption of New York and how everyone can be 'bought', which I did not mention for time reasons), some themes, and other little interesting facts and debates cleared. See how Scorsese made some direct references in Taxi Driver to a western with John Wayne entitled the Searchers.
