Zorba the Greek Yolngu style
Aboriginal interpretation of Zorba the Greek. Frank Djirrimbilpilwuy from Milingimbi has been in the Indigenous Media Industry for many years and has been a long-standing member and supporter of the Top End Aboriginal Bush Broadcasting Association, TEABBA Radio. He has worked Independently in Music and Film for many years also. As the man behind the camera and release of the video, Frank is also representing the dance group who call themselves "The Chooky Dancers". Frank has said that he filmed the footage at this years Ramingining Festival on the 30th September 2007 and knew it would be "something special" as soon as he saw the boys rehearsing. "The crowd went wild as you can see in the video, and the classic song Zorba the Greek has now become a hit overnight in the communities and now it seems, everywhere else too" Frank said. In just one week of being released onto "You Tube" by the staff at TEABBA Media Services, the video has received rave reviews been given a 5 star rating and has now been viewed well over 15,000 times. "The phones have not stopped ringing at the TEABBA offices, all from people who want to know more about the footage," a TEABBA staff member has said "even the honorable Kon Vatskalis with the Territory Labour party has commented on the video and suggested that they perform at the Greek Glenti next year." The Chooky Dancers are a group of 10 energetic young men who had healthy living in mind when they choreographed the performance. Franks son Lionel is the lead dancer in the video footage at front and center. "They (the Chooky Dancers) begun working on this just after this years Garma Festival in Gukula and worked very hard on it, they also do a Bollywood style performance which is also fantastic" Frank said. It seems that talent runs in Frank's family, with Franks Daughter also in an all Indigenous Line Dance Group also who Frank actively plays a role in. The "Zorba" video, which has not yet been given an official title, is just a sample of Franks works "I edited that footage on "imovie" at the TEABBA Media Services video workshop and now have plans to make a documentary about my Yolngu families connections to the Greek culture". Franks feelings towards the Greek culture have been reinforced by his daughter Pricilla, who requires constant care and is currently being cared for by a woman of Greek heritage in Darwin. "Lillian is a selfless woman, who cares for my daughter" Frank said " she takes Priscilla to church, weddings and all kinds of functions within the Greek community and they are all lovely people with strong cultural identity also which Yolngu people can identify to. I want to show through this documentary how 2 cultures can mix and this dance video is a fabulous start", Frank said. If anyone would like to enquire about Frank's work or "The Chooky Dancers", Frank can be reached on f_garawirrtja@yahoo.com or 0427 801 699 or if difficulties are experienced with getting through, messages can be left with TEABBA Radio on 89 390 400. The Chooky Dancers will appear on Channel 7s Australia's Got Talent which is currently screening on Tuesday nights.

Aboriginal; Yolngu Boy-Yothu Yindi
Hey Yolngu Boy-Under the neon light- Hey Yolngu Boy-Under the neon light- Come with me see a brandnew day- You see that cycad palm- That's the pure eye- You see that cycad palm-That's the living bread- You see that long black cloud- Up towards Batjutjpi- You see that long black cloud- Back towards Narulwuy- Maybe it's raining at Lamiwuy- Hey Yolngu boy-Under the cycad palm- Now you know for sure-That I really care for you-Only the eye can tell you why- Hey Yolngu Boy-Under the neonlight-Hey Yolgnu Boy- Under the neon light-Come with me see a brand new day. See also; Australian Sorry Day and The Yothu Yindi Foundation. Yothu Yindi hail from the Yolngu (Aboriginal) homelands of the north-east coast of Australian's Northern Territory, country the Yolngu have occupied and protected for perhaps 40.000 years or more. The Yolngu members of the band celebrate their deep spiritual connections with the land, connections that are kept alive through song and dance and ceremony, public aspects of which are found within the band's recordings and live performances. Yothu Yindi have emerged at a critical time. As the world's indeginous people are swamped by the tide of industrialisation and pollution, the rape of the forests and the seas, as tribal lands are stolen and languages lost, the time is short. Since time immemorial the Yolngu and other indeginous people of the planet have lived in harmony with the land, ensuring a stable environment for future generations. Over the past century so much of that land has been lost, Mother Earth has been damaged. There are dramatic changes in the weather, rivers choked by industrial waste, skies heavy with pollution, lands stripped and left barren. As we negate the ancient wisdom of living with our environment and, instead, fight against it, try to tame it, we risk losing it. Time is running out. Our generation represents maybe the last chance to rescue Mother Earth, the last chance to learn from indeginous people who hold the lore and the law, to share knowledge and experience and create a world in which we can all live in harmony. Our life on Earth is in a precarious state, our capacity to sustain ourselves and survive has been greatly reduced. There is no time to be complacent if we are to save ourselves. It's time to explore different cultures and learn from them, to get active, participate and learn from those people who are at one with the Earth, who's philosophy is to live with Mother Earth rather than conquering her. It is with these thoughts in mind that we have dedicated ourselves to Freedom.

Hunting for Flying Fox | Yolngu comedy!
This is a hunting expedition with Peter Walarri (in red shorts) and family in 1996. Walarri is Ramingining's primary yidaki player along with David Dharrapuy. What started out as a serious hunting trip quickly turned into a comedy show, with families deliberately acting up in front of the camera. To appreciate the humour you need to have an understanding of Yolngu Matha language. But I guess the visuals and the body language give you an idea of the hilary in which we found ourselves! We ended up with roasted flying foxes (warrnyu) and cabbage palm (da:rra), the flying fox having quite a strong gamey taste. Not my favourite, but if you're hungry, you'll eat anything. Famous artist Dorothy Djukulul can be seen in the background in some of the shots. The big tall bloke is David Biltji, the eldest son of Jardie Ashley... another renowned artist.

Yolngu Comedy - Dhapi Dance Fever with Balwaltja Mununggurr
Before boys' initiation (aka circumcision) ceremonies, Yolngu families put together a big show for comic relief - everyone dancing, being silly and having a good time. Often this includes gender reversal, men and women switching roles. This video features Balwaltja Mununggurr, a young star of Yolngu dhapi cross dressing, who explains himself at the end. Footage comes from Wandawuy and Yirrkala, which saw one of its biggest and grandest dhapi ceremonies in recent years last week, with 6 boys spread out all over the community, with comedians at work at every station. Along with Balwaltja are many of the usual suspects, women who always go crazy dancing at dhapi, and many men including one of his brothers who can be seen looking embarrassed if you look carefully! For yidaki collectors, Djudawit Mununggurr is the big guy, first one walking out at the beginning, and Julie Djarpirr, Beyamarr, Balatj and Mambi Mununggurr, women who have all painted yidaki from time to time, are in there. Julie's the one who sticks out her tongue and is one of the ones biting the feather boa. Their kids include hot young yidaki makers and players like Napurrawuy and Gamanarra Wunungmurra, who can be seen in quick flashes in there.

Yolngu culinary culture with Sylvia Gukurda Mununggurr
This is a short clip of a hunting expedition for Dhukuray mussels, tasty marine morsels cherished by Yolngu. Yolngu culinary culture is an enjoyable thing to learn and to participate in. Learning about the environment, totemic animal and plant species, clan group connections, food preparation, seasons indicator species, and hunting methods never ceases to amaze me. Sylvia Gukurda Mununggurr, sister of the late M*lk*y Mununggurr, and family show how it is done. This was a time for reflection and contemplation when we heard of the news of Sylvia's brother passing away, and there was no better way to take Sylvia's mind off the sad news than to take her out for a day trip... the land is alive and provides spiritual and nutritional nourishment for those in need. My two little sisters, Sylvia's granddaughters, give us a bit of light-hearted entertainment and something to laugh about at a time of great sadness. Gukurda and her late husband William W*t*rr* were kind enough to accommodate me in their home for a year in 1995 whilst I undertook anthropological research in their community. As then chairman of the community council, W*t*rr* provided the support and encouragement that paved the way for a successful field trip that year. He will not be forgotten for his leadership and kindness.
